DSLR RIG REVIEW

Chrosziel:

The Chrosziel rig is similar to the Arri rig in terms of quality and price. They are usually found side by side at shows and on sets.

Here we reviewed:

• Studio Rig Photo 206-40S Follow Focus
• Mattebox 450-R20

An advantage over the Arri gear could be the intention to dedicate the parts more towards DSLR equipment. Sometimes it can be felt that the designers had DSLR’s in mind. It says “DSLR” right on the base plate. It doesn’t get any more obvious than that.

So did they succeed in implementing DSLR compatibility? Let’s see.

The base plate itself is a nice piece of solid metal, it reminds us of the Arri unit. The one screw that holds the rods is easy to twist and locks very tightly, it’s feel is not as awesome as the Arri screws, but it’s almost there and surely good enough to do work with a smile on your face.

Where they didn’t succeed, was the length of the base plate. Unfortunately it’s not compatible with the Zacuto Z-finder with its wide construction and would hit the back of the Chrosziel base plate.

The big, blue ¼-inch screw let’s you mount the camera without the use of a screwdriver or coin. This wheel is so big mounting was very easy. We liked that a lot. Mounting the camera took about 11 seconds.

Sometimes the screw fell off when dismounting the camera though, as the thread is directly underneath the screw itself. Redrock has a better solution for this.
