Alongside the launch of the EOS C50, Canon has also released a new compact portrait lens, the RF 85mm F/1.4L VCM. This lens extends Canon’s RF hybrid RF prime range, alongside the 20/24/35 and 50mm F/1.4L VCM, making it the ideal addition for photographers and filmmakers looking to expand their focal length range. So, let’s take a closer look at it!

Canon started releasing Hybrid RF prime lenses back in June 2024 with the RF 35mm F/1.4L VCM. In October 2024, the company released the RF 24mm F/1.4L VCM and 50mm F/1.4L VMC. Lastly, in March 2025, the RF 20mm F/1.4L VMC joined the lineup.

Otherwise, many users were waiting for a longer focal length, and the wait is now over with the launch of the RF 85mm F/1.4L VCM.

Canon RF 85mm F/1.4L VCM – features

Similar to its shorter focal length siblings, the Canon RF 85mm F/1.4L VCM is a compact lens that measures only 76.5mm x 99.3mm, which is similar to the other lenses in the lineup, but slightly heavier than the others at 636g/1.40lbs.

This lens covers full-frame image sensors and features a maximum aperture of F/1.4, making it ideal for low-light shooting scenarios and achieving a good subject/background separation.

On the lens, you’ll find a dedicated smooth-action Iris Ring ideal for filmmakers, as well as a customizable Lens Control Ring and Lens Function Button.

Inside the lens, you’ll find a Voice Coil Motor (VCM) for smooth and silent autofocus performance with minimal focus breathing. Interestingly, Canon mentions that “the Voice Coil Motor in the lens emits a low-level magnetic field. While generally safe to use, we advise consulting your doctor if you have a pacemaker or any other medical device to address any concerns.”

Since this is an L-series lens, you can expect Canon’s premium build quality and a weather-sealed design with multiple weather seals all around the lens to make sure it will survive the most challenging shooting conditions.

Lens design

The RF 85mm F/1.4L VCM features UD and aspheric lens elements to reduce chromatic aberrations, as well as Super Spectra and ASC coatings to improve sharpness. The front lens element has an oil-repellent fluorine coating to facilitate cleaning.

The rounded 11-blade diaphragm design is similar to other lenses in the lineup to provide a natural and pleasing bokeh. Lastly, the front filter diameter is 67mm.

Price and availability

The Canon RF 85mm F/1.4L VCM should be available this month for $1,649. At approximately half the size and weight compared to the RF 85mm F1.2L USM (link: ), this lens is a solid option for filmmakers and content creators looking for a lightweight professional portrait prime lens.
