PMI Gear SmokeNinja Pro Introduced – Compact Smoke Machine with Pro Features

PMI Gear is introducing the SmokeNinja Pro, a compact smoke machine designed with professional productions in mind. Building on the popularity of the original SmokeNinja, the new Pro model delivers higher output, modular setups, DMX control, and even wearable smoke effects. This may just be the first smoke machine ecosystem in the business!

For PMI Gear, innovation in atmospheric tools has become a calling card. Last year’s SmokeNinja quickly gained a following among creators who appreciated its portability. As it gained traction, professionals soon asked for more: a compact unit with enough power, flexibility, and specific control options for real production environments. The answer is the SmokeNinja Pro.

PMI Gear SmokeNinja Pro – Pro features, compact package

While the first SmokeNinja was geared toward consumers, the Pro version steps up its performance dramatically. As per PMI’s specs, it offers the equivalent of 500–700W of output, covering up to 2,000 ft² in just seconds. During the IBC demo, PMI Gear was even asked to limit demonstrations because the device generated too much smoke.

Compared to traditional bulky fog machines that can be excessive and hard to manage (both physically and in terms of smoke flow), the SmokeNinja Pro’s strength lies in precision and control. Instead of one large unit, multiple compact devices can be placed in different corners of a set and easily synced together. These units can attach to one another or be spread across the set, wirelessly triggered.

PMI Gear SmokeNinja Pro – a smoking ecosystem

The Pro’s design is modular, allowing users to scale their setup. Along with a single SmokeNinja unit, PMI Gear offers the “Trident Kit”, a bundle of three machines. This number follows a common rental practice in Hong Kong, in which most rentals are for three machines. From there, filmmakers can expand with additional units, depending on the production scale.

Modularity is one part of the ecosystem, with connectivity as a second pillar. PMI Gear offers an optional DMX module, as well as an option to choose between 2.4GHz and CRMX protocols. But for a true ecosystem, we must have some cool accessories…

Wearable and bubbleable

One surprising innovation is the Smoke Vest. The harness allows a unit to be worn safely underneath a jacket, producing an on-demand smokey performer. The system is heat-resistant, weatherproof, and includes overheat protection, ensuring it does not interfere with acting or movement. This can also be useful for theaters, fashion shows, and more. PMI also adds a bubble kit to let you produce smoke bubbles in various (and controlled) sizes.

Creative applications: from cinema to weddings

Beyond traditional filmmaking, PMI Gear is positioning the SmokeNinja Pro as a tool for photographers and event creatives. The machine can generate bubble effects, with adjustable bubble sizes for different creative looks. Wedding and family photographers, for instance, can use the feature to add magical textures to their images.

For enhanced visuals, PMI Gear recommends pairing the smoke or bubbles with colored lighting rather than pigments, which can be unsafe. Examples on the company’s Instagram show cosplayers and performers using colored lights to create fiery or ethereal effects.

Price and availability

The PMI Gear SmokeNinja Pro starts at $200 for the base unit. The Trident Kit (three units) will set you back $690, with additional accessories included. Accessories such as the DMX module and Smoke Vest are sold separately or as part of kits.
