DJI Osmo Mobile 8 Smartphone Gimbal Launches With Apple DockKit Support and 360° Pan Rotation

DJI’s latest smartphone gimbal brings intelligent subject tracking across three different platforms, including native iPhone camera support via Apple DockKit. The DJI Osmo Mobile 8 features seamless 360° horizontal pan rotation, integrated extension rod and tripod, and a Multifunctional Module with audio recording and fill light capabilities.

DJI has unveiled the Osmo Mobile 8, marking a significant evolution in smartphone gimbal technology with the introduction of Apple DockKit compatibility. This latest flagship model from DJI’s Osmo Mobile series offers creators three distinct tracking methods, making it one of the most versatile smartphone stabilizers available today.

Three tracking methods for maximum flexibility

The Osmo Mobile 8 stands out by offering unprecedented tracking flexibility through three separate systems, each suited to different workflows and shooting scenarios.

For iPhone users running iOS 18.5 or later, the gimbal now supports Apple DockKit, Apple’s intelligent subject-tracking technology. This integration enables subject tracking within the native iPhone camera app or any of the 200+ iOS applications compatible with Apple DockKit, including popular platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and professional tools like Blackmagic Camera. This marks the first time an Osmo Mobile gimbal has offered native camera app support without requiring DJI’s proprietary app.

The new DJI OM Multifunctional Module magnetically attaches to the gimbal and provides hardware-based tracking that works across native camera and livestreaming apps. Significantly, this module can now track dogs and cats in addition to humans, expanding creative possibilities for pet owners and animal content creators. The module operates independently of DJI’s app, giving users the freedom to work with their preferred camera applications.

Finally, the DJI Mimo app for iOS and Android delivers ActiveTrack 7.0, DJI’s proprietary advanced tracking technology capable of following people, pets, or objects. The app introduces Dual Lens Boost on supported iPhone models, which intelligently uses both wide-angle and telephoto lenses together to maintain subject lock even during fast movement or in crowded environments. Smart Capture can detect multiple subjects and enables seamless switching between them.

Multifunctional Module brings integrated audio and lighting

Beyond tracking capabilities, the Multifunctional Module serves as an all-in-one content creation tool. It features a fill light with eight brightness levels and eight color temperature settings, controlled via a side wheel for precise adjustment while shooting. The module includes a built-in microphone receiver compatible with DJI Mic 3, DJI Mic 2, and DJI Mic Mini transmitters, providing professional-quality audio capture for livestreams and vlogs.

The magnetic attachment system allows for quick mounting and removal, while gesture control enables hands-free operation. Users can show their palm to start or stop intelligent tracking, make a “V” gesture to take photos or control recording, and use a “Double L” gesture with both hands to adjust subject framing.

Seamless 360° rotation and enhanced shooting flexibility

The Osmo Mobile 8 becomes the first generation in the Osmo Mobile line to offer unlimited 360° horizontal pan rotation. This capability eliminates the traditional hard stop during wraparound shots and orbits, enabling smooth panoramic footage from any angle. When combined with intelligent tracking, the continuous rotation allows the gimbal to follow subjects through full circular movements without interruption.

For low-angle perspectives, the gimbal features an ultra-comfortable grip design specifically engineered for ground-level shooting. This complements the tracking system’s new pet-following capability, making it easier to capture dogs and cats from their eye level. An integrated extension rod extends the shooting range for higher vantage points and overhead shots, while built-in tripod legs fold out from the handle base for stable tabletop operation.

Stabilization performance and shooting modes

DJI’s seventh-generation three-axis stabilization technology delivers consistent stability across various shooting scenarios. The gimbal supports multiple follow modes, including Pan Follow, Pan-Tilt Follow, POV, Lock, and a faster profile for sports and action sequences.

Users can quickly switch between front and rear cameras with a button press, while three presses on the trigger rotates the rear camera to face the user for high-resolution selfies. The system enables seamless transitions between filming subjects and scenery while maintaining image quality.

Battery life and charging capabilities

The Osmo Mobile 8 weighs 370g and provides up to 10 hours of operating time under standard usage conditions. The gimbal can also charge a connected phone during extended outdoor filming sessions and livestreams, though heavy use of tracking and fill light features will reduce overall runtime. Charging utilizes a USB-C port on the handle.

Comparing with the Hohem iSteady V3 Ultra

I recently reviewed the Hohem iSteady V3 Ultra, another smartphone gimbal featuring app-free multimodal tracking with a detachable remote. While both gimbals target similar markets, they take different approaches to the tracking and control experience.

The Hohem iSteady V3 Ultra’s standout feature is its 1.22-inch touchscreen remote that provides a live preview from the tracking module camera, allowing users to see what the tracker sees from up to 10 meters away and adjust settings without touching their phone. The DJI Osmo Mobile 8, by contrast, offers three separate tracking systems, including Apple DockKit support, providing broader compatibility across different apps and platforms, but without a dedicated preview screen on the gimbal itself.

Both gimbals include fill lighting and support for wireless microphone systems. The Hohem unit features gesture control similar to the Osmo Mobile 8’s Multifunctional Module, while DJI’s system benefits from compatibility with DJI’s established microphone ecosystem, including Mic 3, Mic 2, and Mic Mini.

In terms of stabilization, the DJI Osmo Mobile 8 incorporates DJI’s seventh-generation three-axis technology, while the Hohem impressed me with strong stabilization performance for its compact size class. The DJI gimbal’s 360° infinite pan rotation represents an advantage for wraparound shots and continuous tracking movements. You can read our detailed review of the Hohem iSteady V3 Ultra for a comprehensive look at that competing system.
