DJI has unveiled the Neo 2, a beginner-friendly follow me camera drone launching globally today (except in the US…) that addresses virtually every limitation of its predecessor. The lightweight 151g drone features full omnidirectional obstacle sensing with forward-facing LiDAR, a 2-axis mechanical gimbal, 4K video at up to 100fps, and tracking speeds reaching 12 m/s. Additional highlights include 49GB internal storage, gesture control 2.0 with return to palm functionality, a new SelfieShot mode, and an optional O4 digital transceiver for extended 10km transmission range. Pricing starts at £209 / €239 / AU$409 for the drone-only package, though the Neo 2 will not be officially available in the United States market at launch.
The DJI Neo 2 systematically fixes the first generation’s pain points. Where the original offered palm takeoff but no obstacle avoidance, the Neo 2 provides omnidirectional sensing. Where tracking topped out at jogging speed, the Neo 2 follows cyclists and intermediate skiers. The new model adds a built-in screen and mode selection buttons, enabling mode changes without connecting to the DJI Fly app. Full-coverage propeller guards remain standard with detachable, replaceable components.
The single most significant upgrade tackles the original Neo’s complete absence of obstacle avoidance. The Neo 2 implements an omnidirectional monocular vision system paired with downward infrared sensing and forward-facing LiDAR. The forward LiDAR provides 0.3-8m measurement range with 60-degree horizontal and vertical FOV, while vision sensors detect obstacles from 0.5-15m in all directions.
This transforms the Neo 2 from a drone requiring constant visual monitoring into one executing automated flight modes safely. For first-time users, omnidirectional sensing provides genuine peace of mind during palm operations. Beyond obstacle detection, the enhanced sensors enable stable hovering over water, near building edges, on snow, and at cliff edges, scenarios that previously caused drift and positioning instability with the original’s limited downward vision system.
Maximum tracking speed jumps from 8 m/s to 12 m/s (43 km/h), crossing into practical action sports documentation. The faster tracking accommodates casual cycling and intermediate skiing, scenarios where the first generation couldn’t keep pace. DJI optimized the algorithm specifically for cycling with faster response times and more reliable subject locking, plus stable pursuit during dramatic directional changes in skiing runs.
Users can adjust the drone’s position during tracking using gesture control without interrupting flight. Single-hand palm gestures control left/right positioning and altitude, while dual-hand gestures adjust distance. This eliminates landing and repositioning for angle adjustments. The omnidirectional sensing integrates with faster tracking, enabling front and side angles with collision avoidance active throughout pursuit.
The 1/2-inch CMOS sensor now pairs with a 2-axis mechanical gimbal covering tilt and roll, compared to single-axis on the original. This dual-axis stabilization works alongside RockSteady EIS for smoother footage. The gimbal provides -90 to 70-degree controllable tilt range with 100 degrees per second maximum speed and ±0.01-degree angular vibration range.
Video specifications reach 4K (3840×2880) at 60fps in 4:3 format via Wi-Fi, with 100fps capability in both 4K 16:9 (3840×2160) and 1080p when paired with a remote controller. For vertical content, the Neo 2 captures 2.7K resolution (1512×2688) at 60fps, substantially improved from the original’s 1080p vertical shooting. This 2.7K footage comes from the 4:3 sensor without cropping.
Portrait mode optimization automatically enhances facial brightness, adjusts contrast, and optimizes skin tones when tracking humans in ActiveTrack, QuickShots, or SelfieShot modes. Maximum video bitrate reaches 80 Mbps. The Neo 2 continues JPEG-only for stills at 12MP resolution (4000×3000 in 4:3 or 4000×2250 in 16:9).
The new SelfieShot feature addresses couples, families, or friend groups wanting photos without recruiting strangers or setting up tripods. The mode supports single and group subjects with three framing options: waist-up, full-body, and wide shots. The drone handles composition and camera movement automatically with portrait optimization ensuring well-lit faces and natural skin tones. This transforms the Neo 2 from just an action tracking tool into a comprehensive content creation companion for travel and family events.
Gesture control expands beyond the original’s palm takeoff. Face the drone with a single palm to control lateral movement and altitude. Extend both palms and move them apart to send the drone farther, or bring them together to draw it closer, working in Spotlight and Follow modes for real-time composition adjustments.
The system extends to subject switching during flight. Another individual facing the drone with palm extended triggers a blue LED flash confirming successful recognition, then switches tracking to the new subject without landing. Return to palm functionality reverses takeoff autonomously. Stand facing the drone with palm extended, and once recognition succeeds (blue LED flash), the Neo 2 automatically flies back and lands in your hand.
Internal storage more than doubles from 22GB to 49GB, providing approximately 105 minutes at 4K/60fps or 175 minutes at 4K/30fps. Wi-Fi 6 connectivity enables download speeds up to 80 MB/s during QuickTransfer, downloading full storage contents in approximately 11 minutes. The drone uses exFAT file system but doesn’t support microSD card expansion, requiring regular offloading to manage the fixed 49GB capacity.
Maximum flight time reaches 19 minutes without propeller guards (17 minutes with guards), a one-minute improvement over the original’s 18-minute spec. Each fully charged battery enables at least 20 palm takeoff and landing cycles using Circle, Rocket, and Dronie modes. Battery capacity increases from 1430 mAh to 1606 mAh, with direct charging requiring approximately 70 minutes from 0-100% at 15W maximum power. The two-way charging hub charges three batteries simultaneously in about 68 minutes when supplied with 60W power.
Wind resistance improves from Level 4 (8 m/s) to Level 5 (10.7 m/s). The 151g weight (160g with optional digital transceiver) compared to the original’s 135g doesn’t significantly impact flight, while enhanced motors and sensing deliver more confident handling. Maximum horizontal speeds reach 12 m/s in Sport mode and tracking, up from 8 m/s. Ascent speeds climb to 5 m/s in Sport mode (versus 3 m/s previously), while descent remains capped at 3 m/s. Maximum takeoff altitude stays at 2000m above sea level.
Standard Neo 2 relies on Wi-Fi with 500m effective range, matching the original for typical recreational use. The optional DJI Neo 2 Digital Transceiver module enables O4 video transmission, extending range to 10km (FCC) or 6km (CE/SRRC/MIC) in unobstructed environments. Live view reaches 1080p/100fps with DJI Goggles 3 at 50ms minimum latency, 1080p/60fps with Goggles N3 at 54ms latency, or 1080p/60fps with RC-N3/RC 2 controllers at 120ms latency.
The O4 system operates across 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands with 60MHz maximum bandwidth and 2T2R antenna configuration supporting 60 Mbps video bitrates. Controller compatibility spans the RC-N3, RC-N2, and RC 2 for standard operation, plus Goggles 3 or Goggles N3 with RC Motion 3 or FPV Remote Controller 3 for immersive manual flight.
Six QuickShots modes provide pre-programmed movements including Dronie, Circle, Rocket, and Boomerang. The new Hitchcock effect (dolly zoom) creates distinctive foreground/background perspective shifts for dramatic social content. MasterShots captures multiple shots with varied movements, then automatically edits footage with music for polished final videos.
Voice Control 2.0 offers enhanced recognition accuracy. When paired with Bluetooth earphones or an Apple Watch, users issue basic commands during cycling or skiing when hands remain occupied. The built-in screen and mode buttons enable complete configuration without smartphone or controller connection.
The Neo 2 addresses virtually every major limitation. Obstacle avoidance transforms from zero to omnidirectional sensing with LiDAR. Tracking speed increased 50% from 8 m/s to 12 m/s. Stabilization upgraded from single-axis to dual-axis gimbal. Video jumped from 4K/30fps to 4K/100fps. Vertical video improved from 1080p to 2.7K. Storage doubled from 22GB to 49GB.
Weight increased modestly from 135g to 151g (160g with transceiver), remaining below most registration thresholds. Flight time improved marginally from 18 to 19 minutes. Wind resistance upgraded from Level 4 to Level 5. Battery capacity grew from 1430 mAh to 1606 mAh, though charging time increased from 50 to 70 minutes. Positioning instability over water, snow, and edges resolves through enhanced sensing. The optional O4 transceiver provides extended range unavailable on the Wi-Fi-only original.
The DJI Neo 2 launches with four package configurations at varying price points. The drone-only package retails for £209 / €239 / AU$409, representing a modest premium over the original Neo’s £169 entry price. This basic configuration includes the drone, one battery, and propeller guards but no remote controller or charging hub.
The DJI Neo 2 Fly More Combo (Drone Only) retails for £289 / €329 / AU$549, adding additional batteries and the two-way charging hub while maintaining controller-free operation. For users wanting remote control capability, the standard DJI Neo 2 Fly More Combo retails for £349 / €399 / AU$709, bundling the RC-N3 controller with three batteries and charging hub. The top-tier DJI Neo 2 Motion Fly More Combo retails for £509 / €579 / AU$989, including goggles and motion controller for immersive FPV flight.
Notably, the DJI Neo 2 will not launch in the United States market through official channels. According to a DJI spokesperson, “The DJI Neo 2 will not be officially available in the US market through official websites following the global launch on November 13. DJI remains committed to the U.S. market and is optimizing our strategy to best serve our customers amidst evolving local conditions.” This follows ongoing regulatory tensions (including the impending DJI US ban on all DJI products) affecting DJI’s US operations, though the company has not specified when or if US availability might materialize.
