FUJIFILM has released firmware version 1.02 for the GFX ETERNA 55, its large format cinema camera that made waves when announced last month. This substantial update adds external RAW recording to Atomos devices via both HDMI and SDI, improves menu response times, refines the side monitor experience, and addresses numerous bugs reported since launch.
The GFX ETERNA 55 marks FUJIFILM’s first dedicated cinema camera with SDI connectivity, and this firmware update (v1.02) expands its professional capabilities significantly. Beyond the headline Atomos integration, the update touches nearly every aspect of the camera’s operation, from faster menu navigation to corrected default settings and resolved recording issues.
The most significant addition in firmware 1.02 is support for external RAW recording to Atomos Ninja TX and Ninja TX GO monitor-recorders. The GFX ETERNA 55 can now output RAW data in 4:3 Open Gate and 4K resolutions at up to 48fps over HDMI, with SDI supporting frame rates up to 29.97fps.
This capability preserves the full sensor readout from FUJIFILM’s large format sensor, maintaining the camera’s native dynamic range and color science for maximum flexibility in post-production. The Open Gate format captures everything the sensor sees, giving filmmakers room for reframing, stabilization, or creative cropping in the edit bay.
FUJIFILM notes that both the GFX ETERNA 55 and Atomos Ninja TX series use CFexpress Type B media, creating a unified workflow where the same cards can move between camera and recorder. Users must update their Atomos devices to the latest firmware (version 12.2.1) to enable this functionality.
“We are delighted to see the GFX ETERNA 55 paired with the Atomos Ninja TX series in a way that fully unlocks the camera’s cinematic potential,” said Yujiro Igarashi, General Manager of Professional Imaging Group at FUJIFILM Imaging Solution Division. “Open Gate 48P RAW represents an exciting step forward for filmmakers who want to capture the full depth, detail, and character of our large-format sensor.”
Atomos has indicated that camera control functionality for the GFX ETERNA 55, allowing operators to adjust ISO, shutter, and white balance directly from the Ninja TX touchscreen, will arrive in a future update.
Firmware 1.02 delivers noticeably faster response times when adjusting key shooting parameters. The update specifically mentions improvements to FPS, ISO, shutter, ND, white balance, project FPS, resolution, and image format settings. For operators working quickly on set, this should translate to a more responsive shooting experience when dialing in exposure or switching between recording modes.
FUJIFILM has made several changes to the side monitor experience. The brightness adjustment now allows the display to go darker than before when setting the LCD brightness to -5, which should prove useful in low-light shooting environments where a bright monitor can be distracting or affect the operator’s night vision.
The time code display has also received visual improvements, with FUJIFILM describing it as an improved “look and feel” for the information overlay shown on the side monitor.
The update brings a redesigned menu screen display, though FUJIFILM does not provide specific details about what has changed visually. Two default values have also been modified: the clip number starting value has changed from 0000 to 0001, and the default sharpness setting has been reduced from 3 to 0. The sharpness change requires a camera initialization to take effect on existing units.
Firmware 1.02 addresses a substantial list of issues that users may have encountered since the camera’s launch. Recording reliability receives attention, with fixes for a bug where recording would not start while AF was locked using touch AF. A time code issue has been resolved where the “Reset All Except Network Settings” option was not properly resetting time code when using Free Run mode.
Aperture control for GF lenses with aperture rings (excluding the GF53-102mm f/5.6 PZ OIS WR) now functions correctly when the ring is set to C position and T-number display is selected. Custom aspect ratio display now shows the correct proportions.
Additional fixes address time code synchronization failures, side monitor display occasionally remaining in REC mode after stopping, the outside side monitor turning off during repeated start/stop cycles, indicator lamp behavior during repeated recording cycles, incorrect default mount adapter settings, and stability issues when loading more than 13 LUT files.
The firmware update takes approximately five minutes to complete. FUJIFILM recommends using a fully charged battery and warns users not to turn off the camera or operate any controls during the update process. The firmware can be applied directly to cameras running version 1.00 or 1.01 without requiring intermediate updates.
The update file is available for download from FUJIFILM’s support website. Users should ensure no file with the same name exists in the download destination, as browsers may automatically rename the file and the camera will not recognize altered filenames.
