ARRI has announced the ARRI LMB 4×5, a new lightweight matte box positioned as an upgrade to the popular LMB-25 at an entry-level price.
Over the past year or two, there has been a wave of innovation in the design of small matte boxes combining light weight and compact form with a full feature set you would expect only from much larger matte boxes. These innovations have resulted in some of the most versatile and useful matte boxes ever to be introduced specifically with hand-held, gimbal and drone use in mind, but with options for easy reconfiguration to multi-stage, swing-away, tilt-equipped workhorses.
ARRI is a name synonymous with the highest quality camera accessories money can buy. The staple of all reputable rental houses and discerning owner/operators, an ARRI matte box is on everyone’s wish list. The ARRI LMB-25 has been at the top of the ladder of professional lightweight matte boxes since it was introduced in 2016.
The LMB 4×5 is a modular design and can be configured as a single filter clamp-on version for drones, gimbals and Steadicam, and up to a multi-stage configuration with 15mm or 19mm rod mounts and all the extras. Clamp adaptors and filter frames from the LMB-5, LMB-15 and LMB-25 are compatible, and any alterations to the configuration of the LMB 4×5 can be made without tools.
Extra features such as tray catchers, swing-away modules and tilt capability all carry across from the LMB-25, as well as new enhancements such as an additional filter stage in two versions, a tilt and flex adaptor and flags that fold flat for storage without the need to be removed.
The LMB 4×5 is expected to ship in July and there are upgrade options available for existing LMB-25 owners.
Will the ARRI LMB 4×5 make its way from your wish list to your buy list? Let us know in the comments below!
