Blackmagic URSA Cine 17K with 65mm Sensor Announced

Alongside the newly introduced URSA Cine 12K with a full-frame sensor and the cube-style PYXIS 6K, Blackmagic Design previewed more new cameras, one of which is the URSA Cine 17K with a gigantic 65mm sensor. Let’s learn more.

Almost as a side note during his NAB 2024 news live stream, Blackmagic Design CEO Grant Petty dropped the news that alongside their new, full frame URSA Cine 12K, they have also developed a 17K version of that same camera with a 65mm-sized sensor. That’s on par in size with the rental-only ARRI ALEXA 65.

The sensor is 50.808mm wide, and 23.316mm high, with a diameter of 55.9mm. The exact resolution will be 17,520 x 8,040 pixels. Blackmagic Design claims 16 stops of dynamic range.

LPL and Hasselblad mounts

Grant Petty mentioned on the live stream that because of the large sensor size, they of course had to go with different lens mounts than PL or EF, which is why the URSA Cine 17K will sport LPL and Hasselblad mounts.

No built-in ND filters, otherwise identical to URSA Cine 12K

The size of the sensor also didn’t allow for building ND filters into the camera like on the URSA Cine 12K, but other than that, the features of the camera are supposedly identical to its “smaller sibling”.
