Canon 7D & T2i Auto Gain Control Kill With an iPod.

April 22nd, 2010

Here is a neat little fix for the AGC on the Canon 7D and Canon Rebel T2i. By adding a tone generator to one side of the audio via an iPod Shuffle, “Mike B”  was able to effectively kill the AGC on the Canon 7D. This should work for any Canon HDSLR with AGC and mic input. Thanks to Vision Wrangler via Twitter for bringing this to my attention.

I tried this trick on my canon T2i/550D but it didn’t work. The result was the tone along with my voice in the same channel (the left one), the right channel was clean, nothing in it. Don’t know if I did something wrong, but it doesn’t work.

Shouldn’t something like this be a Sticky in the Audio Solutions or 7D forum?

I wonder if you can use a 20 hrz tone to kill the auto gain. That way all you need to do in premiere is just clip 20hrs and lower and you have stereo.

Late as Mike B was to noticing this trick, I gotta give him props for sharing a 30 minute tone mp3 file on the youtube page:

Before jumping ship over to a DR100, I used blasted white noise instead of tone. I give myself minus-props for not sharing a file of that anywhere.

Not to be snarky, but for a video devoted to decent audio, the soundtrack on this video has to be one of the most annoying of recent memory. Do me a favor and drop the crummy techno music and oddball EQ effects. Don’t dump that off camera recorder just yet, son….

Love the solution, thanks for sharing. Will try it out as a solution for certain situations.

Keep in mind, however, for those of you who are looking for professional quality audio, it doesn’t mean the 7D is going to give you that even without AGC kicking in. Using a dual system is a true pain in the ass if you’re a one man band, but recording to a separate recorder with mixer is going to blow away any audio you’ll get with a 7D, even with this fix.

great idea !!! JJW ( very good idea for the time code to ! I’m pretty sure you can do the same with an Ipodtouch or an iphone and have a video playing with the time code for easy sync ;) ??

Nice work. I’m gonna try that but instead of an emergency tone I’m gonna sent time code to one channel.

Hey, could you explain a little better what you have in mind there? How would you send time code, and why, considering that the purpose of this is not to have external audio? Thanks.
