If you are not familiar with the Canon EOS cameras, please check out the CineD camera database here and scroll down to Canon cameras. If you want to dive even deeper, take a look at the Canon EOS camera lab tests, for example, the Canon EOS R3. The new EOS R100 is an entry-level camera in the world of mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses and full image control.

Canon EOS R100

When you take the EOS R100 into your hands for the very first time, you will realize how small, compact, and light the new Canon camera feels. It is a DSLR camera for the Canon R-Mount with a weight of only 356g/12,5oz. It features a 24.1 megapixel APS-C sensor and a dual-pixel CMOS autofocus with the ability to detect people and focus on their eyes.

The camera has a fixed built-in 3″ 1.04m-Dot LCD screen on the back, but also features a 2.36m-Dot OLED electronic viewfinder on top. It’s always nice to have the option of using an EVF to focus on framing your shot with no further distractions.

For still photography, you can shoot JPEG or RAW and go up to 6,5fps continuous shooting with one-shot autofocus, or a bit slower with 3,5fps, but with continuous AF. The camera records video in H.264/MPEG-4 AVC with 8-Bit in 4K with 24/25p and 120Mb/s, or in HD with up to 60p and 60Mb/s to a single SD memory card slot.

The camera features a USB-C port for transferring your files and a micro-HDMI port for displaying your signal. When you are recording video, you can use an external microphone via a 3.5mm port. The EOS R100 also features 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless connection to your smartphone to use the Canon camera connect app. It supports creative assist modes for adjusting brightness, contrast, and color balance or controlling the background blur of your shot.

EOS R100 conclusion

The new entry-level mirrorless camera from Canon might not be designed to target professional users who want to make a living from their content, but it is an interesting camera for people who want to take the next step away from a built-in smartphone camera to a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses and full control of all image settings. The camera is also available as a kit together with an RF 18-45mm F4.5-F6.3 lens to get you started in the world of mirrorless cameras.

RF 28mm F2.8 STM lens

Along with the EOS R100, Canon also introduced the RF 28mm F2.8 STM compact and lightweight full-frame wide-angle pancake prime lens. With this size and weight, the lens might be perfect for street photography or when you want to travel light.

It weighs only 120g/4,2oz and therefore is one of the lightest lenses on the market. It has a focal length of 28mm on a full-frame camera and a maximum aperture of 2.8. Using the lens on an APS-C sensor will give you a focal length equal to 45mm. The minimum focus distance is 23cm/9in and you can use 55mm screw-on filters. The STM motor should provide a quiet autofocus function, but the lens comes with a combined control and focus ring for manual focus if needed.
