DJI Mini 5 Pro Released – 250g Drone with 1-Inch Type 50MP Sensor, 4K up to 120fps, and Rotatable Gimbal

DJI Mini 5 Pro is a 250g (C0 in the EU) consumer drone flagship with a 50MP 1-inch-type CMOS sensor that can capture 4K video up to 120fps in H.265 10-bit 4:2:0 with D-Log M, HLG, or normal color mode to a 42GB internal storage or microSD card. The drone gimbal supports 225° roll rotation and true vertical shooting. With improved omnidirectional vision sensing, the Mini 5 Pro can fly more safely even in low light. The drone is available now, starting at €799.

Almost precisely two years ago, DJI announced the Mini 4 Pro as a flagship sub-250g consumer drone, bringing innovations such as D-Log M or 4K 100fps video recording to the Mini series. Since then, the Chinese tech giant has released other lightweight drones (such as DJI Neo or DJI Flip), but none of these could really be considered a successor to the Mini 4 Pro. Today, we are finally getting a serious successor with the new DJI Mini 5 Pro. Let’s take a quick look at what is new with the latest 250g Mini drone.

DJI Mini 5 Pro – 1-inch type sensor in a 250g drone

Perhaps the most notable improvement included in the Mini 5 Pro is the image sensor. The drone includes a 50MP 1-inch type CMOS sensor. Judging by its specs, this seems to be the exact same sensor from the main camera in the DJI Air 3S. The lens has a fixed aperture of f/1.8 and a focal length of 24mm (full-frame equivalent), which results in an FOV of 84°. The minimum focusing distance is 50cm.

The Mini 5 Pro can take JPEG or DNG RAW photos with a maximum resolution of 8192 x 6144 (50MP) or 12MP with binned pixels. There is burst shooting, AEB (automatic exposure bracketing), as well as timed mode.

Thankfully, the 3-axis mechanical gimbal of the Mini 5 Pro supports wide-angle 225° roll rotation and true vertical shooting. This is quite useful for shooting vertical content for social media, better panoramas, and more.

Video up to 4K 120fps

Video recording modes now include 4K 120fps or up to 4K 60fps HDR. The Mini 5 Pro supports following framerates:

• 4K: 3840×2160 @ 24/25/30/48/50/60/120fps
• FHD: 1920×1080 @ 24/25/30/48/50/60/120/240fps

Please note that every clip recorded above 60fps plays as a slow-motion video with a lower base framerate. The maximum video bitrate is 130Mbps.

DJI claims the Mini 5 Pro is capable of up to 14 stops of dynamic range (with the HDR video mode). Let us know if you want us to test the Mini 5 Pro in our CineD lab to find out what the dynamic range is in D-Log M mode.

When it comes to color modes, the Mini 5 Pro offers:

• D-Log M (maximum ISO of 3200) – best for color grading, always in 10-bit 4:2:0 H.265
• HLG mode (maximum ISO of 3200) – always in 10-bit 4:2:0 H.265
• Normal color mode (maximum ISO of 12800). This is available either in 8-bit 4:2:0 H.264 (only in FHD), or in 10-bit 4:2:0 H.265

Another new video feature of the Mini 5 Pro is the 48mm Med-Tele mode with “higher digital zoom resolution than previous models” according to DJI. Additionally, DJI’s portrait optimization technology enhances portraits’ brightness, contrast and skin tones.

Battery, storage, wireless transfer

The drone has a take-off weight of around 250g (DJI claims ± 4g) with the regular intelligent flight battery. The drone therefore sits in the C0 class (in the EU). DJI says there is an option to apply for C1 (EU) in the Fly app. The maximum flight time is 36 minutes (typical “realistic” flight time is around 21 minutes).

There will also be an Intelligent Flight Battery Plus available (not in Europe) which is heavier and has more capacity. With this battery, the maximum flight time extends to 52 minutes (typical “realistic” flight time is around 33 minutes).

DJI Mini 5 Pro now features a larger internal storage of 42GB. On top of it, the drone, of course, accepts microSD cards with a capacity of up to 1TB. The footage can be transferred via a USB-C cable or wirelessly.

The drone supports an Off-State QuickTransfer feature with remote wake-up via the DJI Fly app within Bluetooth range. Without taking out the drone or remote controller, files can be transferred at up to 100 MB/s via Wi-Fi 6.1. Even when switching to other apps, the DJI Fly app continues downloading in the background.

Omnidirectional vision sensing

The Mini 5 Pro features an Omnidirectional Vision Sensing System. DJI claims this provides safer flights thanks to a forward-facing LiDAR, fisheye lenses on the front and rear; binocular lenses and a 3D infrared sensor on the bottom.

This also helps with low light flying as it provides a safer return-to-home function. In city nightscapes, it actively detects and avoids obstacles along flight and return paths.

With sufficient light, the drone can memorize flight routes (thanks to real-time vision positioning and map construction technologies), enabling safe takeoff and return even without a satellite signal, according to DJI.

ActiveTrack 360 and other smart features

The upgraded ActiveTrack 360° offers customizable tracking for various scenarios, and features more stable and safer tracking performance than previous models, according to DJI. Tracking performance has been enhanced to balance speed, agility, and safety.

Further smart features include:

• MasterShots – provides camera movement templates according to portrait, close-up, and long-distance shooting needs.
• QuickShots (QuickShot Rotate, Dronie, Circle, Helix, Rocket, Boomerang, and Asteroid)
• Timelapse
• Spotlight
• Waypoint Flight
• Free Panorama – can create seamless panoramic shots by stitching together multiple images with a manually selected subject or area.

Price and availability

By now, we have all gotten used to DJI offering their products as multiple pre-configured kits. It is no different this time with the Mini 5 Pro. The drone is available now in the following three kit options:

• DJI Mini 5 Pro basic kit includes the drone with the DJI RC-N3 controller, one battery, cables, and two spare props. This kit will retail for around €799 in Europe.
• DJI Mini 5 Pro Fly More Combo (DJI RC-N3) is a kit that includes the drone with the RC-N3 controller, three batteries with the charging hub, ND filter set, carrying bag, more spare props, and cables. It will sell for around €999 in Europe.
• DJI Mini 5 Pro Fly More Combo (DJI RC 2) kit includes the same accessories, but has the RC 2 controller instead of the RC-N3. This kit will cost around €1,129 in Europe.
