Entaniya Fisheye HAL 220 - 220 Degree FOV PL-Mount Cine Lens

The Entaniya Fisheye HAL 220 is a new cine lens with 220° field of view (circular fisheye) and PL-mount. It has a fixed focal length which can be changed by spacer rings. Its main use will most likely be VR 360 cinema camera rigs.

Fisheye lenses have always had a special place in filmmakers kit. They always feature massive distortion and very short focal lengths with very wide field of view. Sometimes such a distortion can be exactly what a filmmaker is looking for – one example could be skateboarding. Fisheye lens combined with shooting from a lower perspective makes sure everything is in the picture and the important part (skateboard and feet) are taking up a larger portion of the image. Perhaps the most widely known use of fisheye lenses are action cameras. Lately, the popularity of these lenses has been increasing hand-in-hand with the increase of VR 360 shooting.

Entaniya is a Japanese company specializing in fisheye cine lenses and VR 360 solutions. They already have a couple of lenses in portfolio, including a 250° field of view circular fisheye lens. This time they are introducing a new fisheye cine lens with up to 220° field of view. What are the specs of the new Entaniya Fisheye HAL 220?

Entaniya Fisheye HAL 220 is 220° angle of view super-wide fisheye cine lens. It features PL-mount and can be used with wide variety of cameras. It is a fully manual lens with the aperture between T2.9 and T16. The lens circle “kind of” covers both super 35 and full-frame sensors. I am saying kind of, because with circular fisheye lenses with such a wide angle of view, the sensor coverage situation is a bit more complicated. Sometimes you might need the whole circle to be recorded (for instance for VR 360 use), while other times it can be important to have the whole sensor covered.

The focal length of the lens is fixed, but it can be changed by exchanging the internal zoom spacer ring. The lens comes with 15 spacer rings ranged between 6.14mm and 8.03mm. Depending on the ring used, the lens circle will cover larger or smaller area of the sensor. The lens is designed to fully cover the super 35mm sensor with 8.03mm spacer.

Entaniya offers downloadable PDF files with the exact lens circle sensor coverage for many cinema cameras – ARRI, RED, Sony, Blackmagic Design, Kinefinity, etc. The files can be downloaded right from the HAL 220 product page.

Please note that the lens design features quite a “long back” – meaning the back element of the lens goes quite far into the camera’s mount. It might be therefore impossible to mount the lens to some cameras – especially in case of using under 7.00mm zoom spacer rings. With some cameras it might be necessary to remove ND filters to not interfere with the back element of the lens. Please confirm the distance from the sensor to the filter and lens bottom before you attach the lens on the camera.
