Great Joy Announce 60mm T2.9 FF 1.33x Anamorphic Lens, plus 1.35x Anamorphic adapter

It is a great joy for me to announce a new manufacturer of anamorphic lenses in town. The name? Great Joy, of course. The company appears to be about to launch its first two products: a 60mm T2.9 full-frame 1.33x anamorphic prime and a 1.35x anamorphic adapter. Sounds strange? Well, read on.

The market of (very) affordable cine primes, zooms and anamorphics is pretty saturated these days. It’s getting harder and harder to see through the thicket. (please also have a look at our Gear Guides).

So here we have another competitor in the realm of surprisingly affordable anamorphic lenses. Well, one lens and one adapter, that is.

This lens offers a 1.33x anamorphic squeeze, which is on the lower end of the spectrum. however, if you want more you can just add the aforementioned 1.35x adapter from the same company and you’ll end up with a 1.8x anamorphic squeeze.. sounds crazy? Well, I’d rather call it interesting.

Look at it this way: this might be a kind of 2-in-1 situation: Shoot with just the 60mm 1.33x lens for a slight anamorphic look or add the 1.35x adapter to the mix and get a proper 1.8x squeeze. In the end, we’re talking about options here. And options are always good in my book.

Another option would be to use any other (spherical) lens with the 1.35x adapter. Just set the lens to infinity (no auto focus anymore!) and slap on the adapter. Great Joy claims a minimum focus distance of 70cm.

Specifications

There’s not much intel about the specifications of the lens itself or the adapter. Great Joy states that the optical design of the 60mm T2.9 1.33x lens consists of 13 elements in 10 groups.

The 60mm lens is available in either Canon RF, Nikon Z, Leica L or Sony E mounts. Both the lens and the adapter are made out of metal, no plastic to be found here.

Pricing and availability

Great Joy’s website states that the 60mm T2.9 1.33x anamorphic lens is selling for $749 and the 1.35x adapter for $449. You’ll need to provide your email address for this, as it appears to be some sort of Launch Day Special. Maybe both pieces will be going up later on.

There’s no specific launch date, yet.
