Hollyland brought the Pyro 7 Ultra to IBC 2026, a 7-inch 1,500-nit transceiver monitor that takes the wireless link of the Pyro Ultra, with 4K60 transmission, 20ms latency, around 1km of range, and an unlimited receiver count in broadcast mode, and puts it behind a factory-calibrated QD-LCD screen. We spoke to Hollyland engineer Alessio at the booth about what separates the Ultra from the original Pyro 7, how camera control now works from the receiver side, and what happens when the new unit is mixed with older Pyro hardware.
The Pyro 7 Ultra is not a new announcement in itself; Hollyland released it on September 3 and we covered the full specification at the time. What the booth conversation adds is the operational detail: receiver limits in each mode, what the range does when broadcast mode is switched on, and which features drop away when older Pyro units join the link. The transmission side is inherited from the Pyro Ultra transmitter and receiver that launched at NAB in April, so anyone already running that system will find the numbers familiar.
One practical note on the video: the monitor was switched off during the interview because the RF traffic on the IBC show floor was interfering with our audio, so the B-roll carries the product shots rather than the conversation.
The original Pyro 7 from 2024 was, in Alessio’s description, a transmission product with a screen attached. The Ultra keeps the 7-inch size but changes the panel to a QD-LCD and calibrates every unit at the factory, which he said gives an accurate Rec.709 image out of the box. Hollyland’s own figures put the panel at 1,920 x 1,200 pixels, 1,500 nits, a Delta E of 1.5 or better, and at least 99% Rec.709 and 95% DCI-P3 coverage at gamma 2.4.
On the wireless side, the Ultra badge means the full Pyro Ultra performance: 20ms latency, a range Alessio put at a kilometer, and a transmitter that can feed an unlimited number of receivers. Video transmission moves to 4K60 where the Pyro 7 topped out at 4K30. He also pointed to a larger set of monitoring tools for the camera operator, which on the spec sheet covers waveform, histogram, zebra, false color, LUTs, focus peaking, anamorphic de-squeeze, and frame guides. Inputs and outputs are HDMI 2.0 and 3G-SDI with cross-conversion between them.
Camera control has been part of the Pyro line for a while, but on earlier models it lived on the unit mounted on the camera. Alessio said the Pyro 7 Ultra extends it across the wireless link: connect a second Pyro 7 Ultra as a receiver and the operator holding that unit can set focus, ISO, shutter speed, aperture and, on larger cinema bodies, the internal ND filters, without touching the camera-top unit. He named Sony as the primary target, with the FX6 and BURANO as examples.
The control functions are currently built around Sony’s Cinema Line, and Alessio said firmware updates are continuing to add support for more cameras, with some Canon and some Nikon models on the list. Hollyland maintains a compatibility page for the Pyro 7 Ultra that lists which bodies currently work and with which functions.
In its regular mode, a Pyro 7 Ultra transmitter connects to up to four receivers, and those can be any unit from the Pyro line, older models included. Switching on broadcast mode lifts that ceiling; Alessio described the count as technically unlimited, while giving 20 devices as the number the company considers safe in real conditions. In an environment as crowded as the IBC hall, he acknowledged that figure comes down.
The trade for broadcast mode is range rather than picture quality. Alessio said the image stays the same, but the working distance halves, from 1,000m (3,280ft) in regular mode to around 500m (1,640ft) in broadcast mode. For situations with heavy interference, there is also a smooth mode that prioritizes a stable, consistent image over the highest picture quality, the same choice Hollyland has offered on the Pyro S and Pyro H.
The Pyro 7 Ultra pairs with the earlier Pyro H, Pyro S, Pyro 5, and Pyro 7, but the link only performs as well as the older unit allows. Alessio was clear that the 20ms latency is reserved for the Ultra models, meaning the Pyro Ultra and the Pyro 7 Ultra; connect an older receiver and it runs at that receiver’s own latency figure instead.
The receiver-side camera control follows the same rule. Setting focus or exposure from a remote unit requires that unit to be a Pyro 7 Ultra, so a crew that wants the feature at the director’s or focus puller’s position needs two of them rather than one Ultra and an older Pyro 7.
Three hardware changes came up in the conversation. The four antennas are now clip-on rather than screw-in, a design Hollyland first used on the Pyro 5 and which Alessio said is simply quicker to set up and pack away between locations.
The F1 and F2 function buttons on the side carry over from the Pyro 7, but more functions can now be assigned to them. Alessio’s example was focus assist for the camera operator, mapped to a button so it can be toggled without going into a menu. Power moves from the NP-F batteries of the Pyro 7 to a V-mount plate on the back, with a locking DC input alongside it; the box includes a D-Tap to DC cable. Hollyland rates the unit at 25W or less as a transmitter and 20W or less as a receiver, at 630g (1.39lb) or under, with dimensions of 180 x 116 x 46.2mm (7.09 x 4.57 x 1.82in) including the plate.
Alessio quoted an MSRP of around €1,200. On availability, his advice was to check with the local distributor in each country rather than waiting on the Hollyland store, since he expects the first batch to sell out quickly. For more information, please visit the Hollyland website.
