Imagen AI Introduces Adaptable AI Color Grading, Free Beta Access, and More

Imagen AI is not your average generative-AI firm – more on that later. The company now aims to ease the Q4 editing crunch (wedding videographers will know what I’m talking about) by launching an open Beta of a new LUT-based AI, integrated into the Imagen Video grading system. It’s designed to preserve your personal touch and creative intent while reducing turnaround times and lowering burnout for working editors. As a direct evolution of the company’s still-image AI workflow, the new platform plugs straight into Adobe Premiere Pro for a smooth, efficient editing experience.

When most of us think of an AI video-editing app, frustration tends to rise, and anyone who has written about the topic knows how quickly that frustration fills the comments. The AI moniker has been slapped onto almost everything, often without delivering much in return. But I think it’s the intellectual property issue, often associated with Generative AI firms, that infuriates creatives the most (rightfully so in some cases). Imagen AI, however, took a different path.

Two key factors differentiate Imagen AI’s approach from most GenAI crops: it’s non-destructive, producing a copy project and working with fully adjustable layers within Premiere Pro, and perhaps more importantly, it doesn’t rely on heaps of scraped intellectual property to generate a video from scratch. It uses your very own workflow, as well as other available ‘presets’ to refine the footage to a unified baseline, maintaining your coloring preferences across different cameras, lenses, and conditions. A refreshing approach indeed.

What’s new

The launch builds on the basics we’ve seen in Imagen’s first public reveal of Imagen Video, which introduced the platform’s core concept of AI-assisted editing and clip-to-clip consistency. This latest announcement expands those capabilities with a deeper integration of user LUTs and a more adaptable grading pipeline that moves away from the usual, and frankly, overly hyped generic presets toward a model tailored for each user’s workflow, based on your own coloring preferences, fine-tunable and non-destructive.

How does Imagen Video work

Imagen Video processes each clip by applying a creator’s preferred baseline look, then automates the technical balancing beneath it. Exposure shifts, white balance, skin tones, etc., are adjusted in the background, while the chosen LUT dictates the overall look. Imagen AI emphasizes quick, easy matching of footage from various cameras from different manufacturers. Using different color algorithms, lenses, or lighting conditions can significantly vary the colors in footage. Instead of spending hours toggling between Lumetri panels, the AI analyzes and balances these discrepancies clip-by-clip while keeping the overall aesthetic coherent. This new Imagen Video iteration emphasizes creator ownership of the final image. Editors can now grade on top of the LUTs and AI corrections, enabling more predictable and repeatable results.

Built-in community initiatives

To support the Beta rollout, Imagen AI is launching the “Creator Circle,” an initiative designed to bring working editors into the development process. A raffle for an “Ultimate Editor’s Kit” includes a BenQ PD3225U monitor and a one-year Adobe Premiere Pro license, while twenty creators will be selected for an “Inner Circle” mentorship and early-access program. If we can deduce from how Imagen AI works with still photography, we may even see a future marketplace for LUTs and grading workflow in the future.

Price and availability

Imagen Video is currently in open Beta and free to use. While no long-term pricing has been announced for the video platform, Imagen’s still-image service uses a per-photo billing model with monthly tier options (as detailed on Imagen AI’s pricing page). This pricing structure may hint at how the video service could eventually be packaged once it exits Beta, though the company has not confirmed any details.

Will you incorporate this kind of generative AI into your workflow? Do you see it as a welcome time-saver or as scary future competition? Let us know in the comments.
