About Us

CineD is one of the world’s leading independent publications for professional filmmakers. From our newsroom in Vienna, Austria, we have covered cameras, cinematography technology, and the film industry since 2008, in three dedicated editions: English, Japanese, and Spanish.

Every month, around half a million filmmakers read CineD, more than 158,000 subscribe to our YouTube channel, and over 65,000 receive our newsletter. Our archive holds more than 22,000 articles, from breaking gear news to the standardized camera measurements of the CineD Lab that are cited as an independent reference across the industry.

What We Do

News and reviews. Daily coverage of cameras, lenses, lighting, audio, and software, written by working filmmakers who use this equipment on real productions.

The CineD Lab. Our standardized, repeatable lab tests measure dynamic range, exposure latitude, and rolling shutter under identical conditions for every camera we test. The methodology is public, the results are comparable across camera generations, and no lab test is ever sponsored.

Databases and tools. The CineD Camera Database, Lens Database, and Lens Coverage Tool turn our test data into free research tools used by filmmakers, rental houses, and manufacturers alike.

Focus Check. Our weekly podcast dissects industry news and brings in the people behind the cameras, from lens designers to Emmy-winning DPs.

MZed. Since 2021, CineD owns MZed (mzed.com), the leading education platform for filmmakers, with around 70 courses taught by some of the most respected names in the industry.

Independence

Our reviews and lab tests are never sponsored and cannot be bought. Editorial decisions are made by the editorial team alone; advertising and commercial partnerships are handled strictly separately and always labeled. How we work is set out in our Editorial Charter, which is binding for everyone who writes, films, or tests for CineD.

CineD is funded through carefully selected advertising, affiliate links, our education platform MZed, and our readers. This mix keeps us independent from any single manufacturer or partner.

Our Story

CineD was founded in Vienna in 2008 as cinema5D, one of the first publications dedicated to the then-revolutionary world of video DSLRs. Filmmakers Nino Leitner and Johnnie Behiri joined in 2012 and have owned and run the company since 2018. In 2020, the site became CineD, short for Cinematography + Digital. The Japanese edition has served filmmakers in Japan since 2016, the Spanish edition since 2018. Today, cinema5D GmbH remains fully owned by its two managing filmmakers, headquartered in Vienna, with a team spanning four continents.

Johnnie Behiri is a documentary filmmaker with more than three decades behind the camera: he learned the craft in daily television news gathering, filmed for Japan's public broadcaster NHK, and spent eight years shooting and editing for BBC News. He joined cinema5D in 2011 and has co-owned and co-run CineD and MZed ever since. Johnnie writes many of CineD's camera reviews, co-hosts our weekly Focus Check podcast, and heads CineD's manufacturer relationships and product development.
