RØDECaster Video S Production Console Introduced

RØDE has just introduced a smaller, more streamlined version of their RØDECaster production console: the RØDECaster Video S. This switcher features three HDMI video inputs, one multi-function USB-C input for UVC video, two full-size XLR/6.3mm combo audio inputs, two 6.3mm headphone jacks, two USB-C audio interfaces, a 2-inch touchscreen, and dual internal wireless receivers for connecting RØDE Series IV wireless microphones. So, let’s take a closer look at this compact yet powerful live switcher!

Australian manufacturer RØDE is well-known for their audio solutions, but for the past couple of years, they also developed multiple devices for live streaming applications. Last year, the company introduced the RØDECaster Video, which we reviewed here – a fully featured production console with a plethora of video and audio I/O ports. However, if you have fewer video and audio sources to switch from, RØDE has just introduced the RØDECaster Video S.

RØDECaster Video S – dimensions

The RØDECaster Video S is way more compact and lighter compared to its big brother, as it measures 25.3 x 12.8 x 6cm/10 x 5 x 2.3in for a weight of 875g/1.92lbs, compared to 30.5 x 13.2 x 6cm/12 x 5.2 x 6in and 1.2kg/2.64lbs for the RØDECaster Video. The RØDECaster Video S is made of plastic and features internal WiFi and Bluetooth antennas, while the RØDECaster Video features external antennas and a metal chassis.

Video input and output ports

At the back of the unit, the RØDECaster Video S features three HDMI video inputs and one HDMI output port, compared to four inputs and two outputs on the RØDECaster Video. Furthermore, the new model also has a single multi-function USB-C port that supports USB webcams, RØDE microphones, and RØDECaster Pro II or Duo compatibility, while the RØDECaster Video features two of these ports.

Audio, Ethernet, and power features

On the audio side, the RØDECaster Video S features:

  • Two USB-C audio interfaces for simultaneous connection to two computers and/or mobile devices.
  • Two 6.3mm headphone outputs. The RØDECaster Video features both line-level monitor outputs and headphone outputs.
  • Two Neutrik combo jacks audio inputs.
  • As previously mentioned, it also features two built-in Series IV wireless audio receivers.

The unit is powered via USB-C PD and requires 45W of power. Last but not least, there is one Ethernet port that supports network cameras (including PTZ control), with up to four NDI inputs and one Ethernet output.

Control and storage

In terms of controls, the RØDECaster Video S features four input buttons and five Scene buttons, whereas the RØDEcaster Video provides six input buttons and seven Scene buttons. Both units feature a 2-inch touchscreen for quickly adjusting settings and two control knobs. Media playback, keying, transitions, multi-source scenes, and graphic overlays are accessible from the front panel.

Regarding storage, the RØDECaster Video S includes 24GB of internal storage for the media library, while the RØDECaster Video has a microSD card slot. Please note that if you want to record your live stream or ISO tracks, you can’t use the internal storage; you’ll need an external USB storage device.

Like any modern live switcher, the RØDEcaster Video S supports RTMP/RTMPS direct streaming over Ethernet or WiFi, and it supports all popular social media platforms, including YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, X, etc.

The RØDECaster companion App also extends the production console’s capabilities with a scene builder, audio mixer, multiple stream profiles, and auto-switching capabilities.
