Ronin 4D: Reliance on TB50 batteries is limiting

Despite its popularity, the Ronin 4D’s reliance on proprietary TB50 batteries continues to limit power options in the field. The new Rolux RL-VP4D V-Mount plate aims to solve that by enabling the use of industry-standard V-Mount batteries, giving users more control over how they power their camera system.

Power flexibility for the Ronin 4D with a V-mount plate

With support for both 14.4V and 26V V-Mount batteries, the RL-VP4D plate opens the door for users to leverage batteries they already own. For productions managing multiple camera systems or aiming to reduce long-term battery costs, this is a welcome improvement.

The plate weighs just 249g and is constructed from aerospace-grade CNC aluminum. Its hollow design promotes passive heat dissipation, helping to keep the system cool during prolonged operation. Installation is straightforward via M4 screw mounting points, and the setup includes a 6-pin LEMO 1B connector and a 60mm cable for compact rigging.

A 5-pin copper socket helps maintain stable power delivery, even under high loads, such as when the Z-axis is engaged. The input range spans from 12 to 30V, and Rolux recommends a battery capable of sustaining 15A of continuous current—roughly 180W at 12V—for reliable operation.

The RL-VP4D is especially suitable for handheld and modular split builds, but is not recommended for high-speed or high-impact movement where the fourth axis may be heavily used.

Rolux Dynasty III 150Wh battery – ideal companion

While the RL-VP4D is compatible with any V-Mount battery, I tried it with the Rolux Dynasty III 150Wh V-Mount battery, and I liked how they worked together. This battery features Samsung 35E lithium-ion cells and a max output of 216W. In addition to BP and D-Tap outputs, it includes USB-A, USB-C (100W PD), 12V, and 8.4V outputs—ideal for powering both cameras and accessories on set.

It also incorporates an aluminum heat sink and a self-developed battery management system to ensure safe and efficient operation across a variety of shooting environments.
