SmallRig has just released three camera cages for the Nikon Z 6III: a regular cage, a “Night Eagle” higher-end version, and a cage for using the Z 6III with the optional MB-N14 grip. All cages are made of aluminum, feature three locking points to secure the camera firmly, have a built-in Arca-Swiss quick-release plate at the bottom, and have plenty of 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 mounting points. So, let’s take a closer look at these!
With impressive recording capabilities such as 6K60P N-RAW internal recording without any crop of the full-frame sensor, ProRes RAW HQ and ProRes 422 HQ internal recording at up to 6K30P, and 4K120P recording capabilities, there is little doubt that the Nikon Z 6III will be a popular mirrorless camera amongst filmmakers. After the camera’s release, SmallRig is one of the first third-party camera accessories manufacturers to release dedicated camera cages and accessories for it.
Let’s start with the first “regular” cage for the Nikon Z 6III. This cage is a wrap-around model that weighs 170g/6oz and attaches to your camera via three mounting points: one 1/4″-20 at the bottom and two screws on the neck strap eyelets.
At the top of the cage, you’ll find one 3/8″-16 threaded hole with ARRI locating pins, six 1/4″-20 mounting points, and a built-in cold shoe. At the bottom, you’ll find a built-in Arca-Swiss plate, a 3/8″-16 and four 1/4″-20 threaded holes, a QD socket, and a slot for the included wrench.
On the right side are two strap slots and four 1/4″-20 mounting points. Lastly, the left side features a NATO rail with three 1/4″-20 and one 3/8″-16 mounting points.
SmallRig also has a solution for using your Nikon Z 6III with the optional MB-N14 vertical grip. This bigger model is very similar to the regular cage, including the same top/bottom/right mounting points.
However, the left side differs, with another built-in Arca-Swiss quick-release plate and three 1/4″-20 mounting points. At the front of the cage, you’ll also find two 1/4″-20 threaded holes.
Last, SmallRig released a “Night Eagle” version of their cage for the Z 6III. This model has gold and red accents and a vintage leather grip on the right side. This gunmetal brown cage has five 1/4″-20 and one 3/8″-16 with ARRI locating pins mounting points at the top and a relocatable cold shoe mount.
You’ll find a NATO rail on the left side with five 1/4″-20 threaded holes. The right side features three 1/4″-20 threaded holes and a strap slot.
The SmallRig cage for the Nikon Z 6III retails for $69.99, the “Night Eagle” version is $99.99, and the grip cage is $119.99. Several kits with a top handle and HDMI protection clamp are also available. All products are available now.
