The Sony FX5 is off to a very strong start. Just hours after orders opened in Japan on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, Sony issued an official statement saying that demand for the new Cinema Line camera has far exceeded the company’s expectations, and that deliveries may be delayed as a result. So if you are planning to get an FX5 soon, you might not want to wait too long.
It has only been a week since the Sony FX5 was announced, and the compact full-frame camera has quickly become one of the most talked-about releases of the year. We have covered it extensively: you can find our full Sony FX5 review including lab test results, our interview with Sony on firmware V2 timing and the Cinema Line strategy, and our Focus Check podcast episode with Philip Bloom, who shares his hands-on impressions.
In the official notice, dated July 28, 2026 and addressed to its customers, Sony states that orders for the FX5 have significantly surpassed the company’s forecasts since order acceptance began that same day, and that it may therefore take longer than usual for the camera to reach buyers. The company adds that it is doing its utmost to meet customer demand and asks for patience in the meantime.
Supply notices like this are a familiar ritual for Japanese camera manufacturers at launch, and they do not always translate into long waiting times. Still, the timing is notable: the warning came on the very first day of order acceptance in Japan. The strong demand does not appear to be limited to the Japanese market either: at the time of writing, the FX5 is already flagged as a top seller at B&H in the US.
The FX5 body only (ILME-FX5B) is priced at $4,898 / €5,399 / £4,699, while the version bundled with the XLR handle unit (ILME-FX5) sells for $5,498 / €5,999 / £5,199. Both configurations are available for pre-order now; European and UK prices include VAT. Shipping is slated to begin in mid-August in the US, while the Japanese release is set for August 21, 2026. Whether the early rush will actually delay deliveries outside of Japan remains to be seen; for now, early pre-orders likely stand the best chance of arriving on time.
