Teradek Wave 7" 5-in-1 Live Streaming Monitor Released

Teradek has released the Wave, a 7″ live streaming monitor that handles encoding, smart event creation, network bonding, multi-streaming, and recording. This compact package features a 1000nits touchscreen display, and even if it only has one HDMI video input, this device has the potential to become the next all-in-one device for content creators who need video streaming features.

With the pandemic, many of us had to change our way of working, and live streaming has surely become the “new trend.” To do so, filmmakers also had to adapt, and devices making their lives easier exploded with dozens of options now available on the market.

Teradek is mainly known amongst professional filmmakers for making high-quality – and usually expensive – wireless video systems. However, they recently released more affordable solutions with HDMI-only inputs like the Teradek Spark 4K. In addition, the company has just released the Teradek Wave, an HDMI-only 7″ live streaming monitor at an “affordable” price.

Teradek Wave – Monitor features

The Teradek Wave is a 5-in-1 device with encoding, smart event creation, network bonding, multi-streaming, and recording capabilities. Everything is packed inside a 7″ monitor. The display is a touchscreen with a maximum brightness of 1000nits, which should barely be enough to be daylight-viewable.

I would not be surprised if the display comes from the Smallhd Focus 7 or Indie 7, as both companies are part of Vitec Group and work together closely.

At the back of the Teradek Wave, you’ll find a built-in Sony NP-F battery plate with hot-swap capabilities. As one battery depletes its charge, Wave will switch its power source to the second battery – allowing you to safely remove and charge the first battery while maintaining constant power.

At the bottom of the Wave, you’ll find:

  • One USB Type-C port, so you can also power it via an external battery.
  • An Ethernet port.
  • One USB Type-A port for LTE modems. There is another USB port on top of the Wave.
  • A 1/4″-20 mounting point with two locating pins.
  • One HDMI input port that supports resolution up to 1080p60. The live streaming resolution is also limited to 1080p60.
  • One 3.5mm microphone input and headphone jack.

FlowOS

The Wave runs under the company’s own FlowOS. So your only option to adjust your settings and control the Wave is the touchscreen. Teradek and SmallHD’s user interfaces are well-known for being some of the best in the industry, and this new FlowOS should not disappoint.

This operating system has some unique features, like the ability to create and save live streaming presets ahead of your event. You can even monitor your video while keeping tabs on your stream quality and statuses open.

Encoding, recording, live streaming features

The Teradek Wave handles H.264 encoding, RTMP(S) streaming, and recording. You have multiple options to connect the Wave to the network and start live streaming, including Ethernet, USB modems, and cell phone hotspots. Thanks to the device’s network bonding capabilities, it’s nearly impossible to have connection issues.

According to Teradek, “if one connection becomes unreliable, Wave load balances across your other connections – giving you reliable bandwidth in challenging environments. Say goodbye to choppy streams, fluctuating bitrates, and signal drops.”

With the Teradek Wave App for iOS/Android devices, you can monitor your stream’s stats, including bitrate, bonding status, and resolution, to ensure a stable stream.

Video recordings are stored on the SD card at the top of the monitor.

Sharelink

Sharelink is Teradek’s cloud platform that gives you two advantages: multi-destination streaming and network bonding. It means that you can reliably send your live productions to multiple platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, and more.

Price and availability

The Teradek Wave is available now for $1190/€1043.

The Wave comes with a 7″ screen protector, one tabletop stand, a thin Ethernet and HDMI cables, a 7″ neoprene monitor sleeve, the Sony L series battery bracket plate, a 30W USB-C power adapter, two WiFi antennas, and a quick start guide.
