Sony’s new FX5 is the first compact Cinema Line body to offer a clip-on, detachable viewfinder – and it arrives at a time when SIGMA, FUJIFILM, and Blackmagic Design have all been offering their own long-standing solutions, albeit from different directions. If the detachable EVF really is making a comeback, it’s worth asking why it disappeared in the first place – and what operators actually give up when they frame off a monitor instead.
There is a whole generation of filmmakers who have never composed a shot through an eyepiece. That was the starting point of our EVF or monitor poll, where we noted that the Sony FX3 and FX30, alongside the Canon EOS C70 and C80 (to name a few), all arrived without one. The Canon EOS C50 continued that pattern. Somewhere along the way, the viewfinder lost its place to a bigger, more photogenic product: the on-camera monitor. So when I asked in our Sony FX5 review whether EVFs are having a comeback, it was less a rhetorical question than a hopeful one. Looking at the current market, four manufacturers now offer original detachable EVFs for their own compact cameras, alongside a few standalone (yet expensive) options.
For me personally, the transition from working in broadcast with shoulder-mount ENG cameras to DSLRs, and later mirrorless, was the moment “things changed forever.” Suddenly, I was “forced” to work with the camera LCD. Later on, solutions from Zacuto and others tried to fill the gap by offering an eyepiece mounted behind the screen, and back in the day, that worked well. Then came Cineroid, a small South Korean company that was the first to introduce a dedicated HDMI EVF to the market (at least to my memory), followed by Alphatron, Kinotehnik, and, much later, Zacuto, Portkeys, and Kinefinity. But using an EVF never really caught on. These finders were relatively bulky and pricey – and on top of that, back in the day, a small young company started offering recording monitors and took the market by storm. If there is one thing you can’t take away from Atomos, it is the way their aggressive marketing changed our industry forever. Suddenly, monitors were the “go-to” solution for most people out there.
While I understand the occasional need to record externally, this left me – along with other veteran filmmakers – quite astonished. How can one film outdoors in bright sunlight with a monitor? Do they get their exposure right? Don’t they need the additional support an EVF offers for a more stable shot? After all, an eyecup pressed against your head becomes a third point of contact alongside your two hands. And lastly, what about focusing? Can these shooters pinpoint sharpness “just like that”? The list goes on – from easily spotting a cable running under a chair to staying informed about your camera settings. (And I did not even mention the possible latency issues when using an external LCD monitor.)
In any case, if you have ever worked with an EVF, you know that looking at an image through it feels very private, while an LCD feels “less personal,” exposing you to constant (and possibly unwanted) feedback.
Our office team can attest: every major camera release that lacked an EVF got criticized immediately. When communicating with the respective manufacturers, we kept hearing that the EVF is a “thing of the past” and that today’s generation of young filmmakers and content creators are all used to (and prefer) working with an LCD screen. When asked where this information came from, the answer was “internal research.” Fast forward to today, and we are happy to see that more recent research has apparently shown that the EVF is indeed a vital tool and a legitimate part of any camera.
Moving on, it is worth mentioning that detachable EVFs for compact cameras are not a Sony invention. As clever and useful as they are, similar products from other companies came first. Although adding to the cost of new equipment, in general, the concept is very straightforward: in need of such a product? Simply add it to your camera. Think you can do better without it? Then skip it and move on with your “naked” purchase. Whether the rest of the industry follows Sony probably depends less on operator preference than on how many DVF-EL1 units move in the first six months.
Alongside Sony’s DVF-EL1, here are a few recent devices worth mentioning:
SIGMA’s EVF-11
SIGMA solved this years ago, but with the same compromise. The EVF-11 arrived alongside the fp L. A 3.5mm stereo mini jack handles headphone monitoring, which matters because the camera body has no such output of its own.
In our review of the camera, I called it an essential accessory precisely because it docks to the body without any additional HDMI or power cabling. The catch will sound familiar to FX5 buyers: SIGMA states plainly that the EVF-11 and the HU-11 hot shoe unit cannot be mounted on the camera together, and as the company told us in our interview around the launch, the ports are custom-made for the fp series – so the finder fits no other camera and blocks the HDMI output while attached. One connector, one benefit, one casualty.
FUJIFILM is running two experiments at once
FUJIFILM has kept a serious finder alive on the stills side, where the GFX100 II carries a 9.44-million-dot OLED EVF running at 120fps in live view – a panel I praised in our GFX100 II review for being large and clear while still allowing the magnification ratio to be reduced so the whole frame stays visible. For extended usage, this EVF can also accommodate an EVF Tilt Adapter (The FUJIFILM EVF-TL1). That hardware is now doing double duty: at Inter BEE, FUJIFILM showed us a viewfinder prototype for the GFX ETERNA 55 that repurposes the GFX100 II finder with a modified proprietary connector carrying both power and a DisplayPort signal through a single connection.
For a camera whose 4:3 sensor is one of its strongest anamorphic arguments – as came through in our first-look review – a dedicated finder that understands open-gate framing would be considerably more than a convenience.
Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera Pro EVF for the 6K/6K Pro
The common thread across all of these devices is a single proprietary connection carrying video, power, and camera data. Technically, it is the right answer, and it is the same conclusion Blackmagic Design reached with the Pro EVF for the 6K/6K Pro (and the URSA Cine EVF). This micro OLED finder with a 1280 x 960 resolution connects directly to the top of compatible cameras via a single integrated proprietary connector and locks securely in place with a built-in screw.
While the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera Pro EVF cannot connect to other cameras due to its proprietary connector, the URSA Cine EVF might be able to do so, as the company left the door open to connecting it to other cameras capable of supplying power and DisplayPort data over USB-C – a meaningfully different proposition from a connector that “dies” with the body it was designed for.
When the obvious becomes less obvious, I can’t help but feel sorry for a generation that is missing the opportunity to control and compose a frame in a very “personal” way. Panasonic LUMIX S9 lovers, Sony FX3 advocates, Canon EOS C50 shooters, Nikon ZR believers (to name a few) are simply missing out on a more natural and creative workflow. I can only hope that the introduction of the Sony FX2 (Review here), and now the FX5 (Review here), will encourage more manufacturers to stop saving money, stop hiding behind internal polls, and add a FUNDAMENTAL piece of equipment – be it fixed or detachable.
