Z CAM Electronic ND Filter for Z CAM E2 S6, F6, and F8 Cameras Now Available

Z CAM eND (electronic ND) Filter is a new product compatible with Z CAM E2 S6, F6 and F8 cinema cameras (EF or PL Mount versions). First introduced during the IBC 2019, the eND filter offers ND range from 1.7 to 6.7 stops in 1/3 stop increments. It is now available for pre-order.

Last year during the IBC Show in Amsterdam, we stopped by at the Z CAM booth to talk about their new flagship cameras and we were happy to see the planned optional Electronic ND Filter unit. Make sure to check the video and the article itself.

Now, the Electronic ND Filter Unit became a reality. It is ready to start shipping.

The eND Filter is basically a removable piece, which slides in or out of the camera from the side. The piece that comes with the camera contains a pure glass element. The optional eND unit will contain an electronic ND filter, so limiting the light entering the sensor will be very convenient.

It seems Z CAM’s electronic ND filter unit will offer a strong range of 1.7 to 6.7 stops in 1/3 stop increments. The advantage of electronic ND is much more precise control over its strength – the strength changes seamlessly, so the exposure can be consistent even when the light is changing (for instance with clouds during outdoor shoots). The ND filter unit will be held in position by two screws.

This electronic ND filter will be implemented in all the Z CAM E2 flagship models – Z CAM E2 S6, F6, and F8 – with EF-mount or PL-mount. The only exception is the Z CAM E2 S6 with the Micro Four Thirds mount. The electronic ND unit will not be available for this mount simply because of the much shorter flange focal distance.

awesome, the A7SIII needs something like this built in, maybe it would fit if they remove the mechanical shutter?

Worth noting that it is only controllable in camera, via menu so far. No auto function. It’s not a quickly accessible item. Also changing isn’t super fast between “stops”. Hopefully users can map custom button/s to it in the future.

Some lanc style handgrip clutches work with it which would be a better alternative.

As seen on the fb group.

With a minimal stop of 1.7 instead of 0, I don’t see this being too practical for doc use. Add to it that the levels aren’t instantly accessible it seems only viable for narrative or controlled situations.

Is there any IR control or does Z cam have that under control with an OLPF or on the glass sensor cover?
