ZEISS Otus ML Lenses for Z-Mount Start Shipping

ZEISS has officially released the first two lenses in their new Otus ML series: a 50mm f/1.4 and an 85mm f/1.4, adding Nikon Z-Mount to Canon RF and Sony E mounts. Designed for photographers who want full manual control and high optical precision, these lenses carry over the familiar Otus character while adapting to a mirrorless format. They’re stills-first lenses, but features like internal focus and a de-clickable aperture ring may give them added appeal for filmmakers.

Back in February, we wrote about the Otus ML lenses when they were first announced for mirrorless cameras. Now that the lenses have started shipping, let’s take a quick look at what each one offers.

Key features for both lenses

Both the 50mm and 85mm Otus ML lenses are built for full-frame mirrorless cameras and offer the same high-end core features:

  • Full-frame | f/1.4 to f/16
  • 10-Blade Diaphragm
  • 260° Focus Throw
  • Compact & Portable Form Factor
  • ZEISS T* Antireflective Coating
  • Dust and Moisture-Resistant Construction

The 50mm follows a Distagon optical design and is considered a general-purpose fast prime, while the 85mm uses a Sonnar optical design optimized for portrait work.

ZEISS Otus ML 50mm f/1.4

The Otus ML 50mm f/1.4 is a standard prime with ZEISS’s signature rendering: sharp across the frame, low in distortion, and free from chromatic aberrations. It uses a Distagon optical design and has ten aperture blades for smooth bokeh. The long 260° focus throw gives you precise manual adjustments, while the internal focus keeps the lens length constant, useful for rigging or handheld work.

ZEISS Otus ML 85mm f/1.4

The Otus ML 85mm f/1.4 is built for portrait work as it has a longer focal length but with the same apochromatic sharpness and minimal aberration found in the 50mm. It uses a Sonnar optical design and the same ten-blade aperture as the 50mm for smooth background separation. Like the 50mm, it features a 260° focus throw and internal focusing, giving filmmakers and photographers better control with shallow depth of field.

The ZEISS build

ZEISS has built their name on optical performance, and these lenses continue that tradition with sharp, detailed rendering across the frame. They feature ZEISS’s typical attention to detail, including an all-metal housing, engraved yellow scale markings, and a blue sealing ring that protects the lens and camera interface. Both lenses are rated for use in temperatures from –4°F to 130°F (–20°C to 55°C). The 50mm f/1.4 weighs 677g (1.5 lbs), while the 85mm f/1.4 comes in at 1,040g (2.3 lbs) – substantial, but consistent with the all-metal housing and build quality.

The focus and aperture rings are fully manual, with a long 260° throw and a de-clickable aperture for smooth adjustments. Using the supplied tool and a small screw on the bayonet surface, the aperture ring can be set for stepless, silent control, especially helpful for video.

Who is it for?

At this price, you’re not just buying a lens, you’re deciding how you want to work. ZEISS describes the Otus ML series as a lens for storytellers – those who prefer to work with care and intention rather than speed. There’s no autofocus here, but the manual control is highly precise, and the build encourages a very deliberate, hands-on approach. For photographers or filmmakers working with planned shoots, these lenses could be a compelling option.

Price and availability

The Otus ML 50mm f/1.4 is priced at $2,499 / €1,879.11 and is available now, while the 85mm f/1.4 is available for pre-order at $2,999 / €2,264.57, with shipping expected soon. For more details, visit the ZEISS website.
