At FMX 2025, ZEISS demos a new virtual lens tool that aims to bring physically accurate lens look characteristics into VFX and compositing workflows. Basically mimicking the look of actual lenses from the real worls, applied to a digital image – and the potential seems huge. Read on to learn more about ZEISS Virtual Lens Tech.
ZEISS has announced a major new addition to its CinCraft ecosystem: a virtual lens technology that allows post-production artists to apply the authentic optical behavior of real lenses to computer-generated content in a single step. First demonstrated at FMX 2025 in Stuttgart today, the new tool marks a significant step toward unifying the visual language between cinematographers and visual effects artists — a longstanding challenge in post-heavy workflows.
Unlike typical filter-based blur or defocus effects, ZEISS’ solution is based on physically modeled lens performance. That means traits like focus falloff, cat-eye bokeh, chromatic aberration, field curvature, and geometric distortion are not approximated, but faithfully recreated frame by frame — much like they would appear when captured through real glass on set. The idea is to enable compositing artists to select a “digital lens” from a virtual shelf, echoing how DPs select optics from a rental house.
“The lack of ‘ground truth’ data for lens look characteristics makes it hard for post-production professionals to talk and apply the same visual language that cinematographers and directors expect,” says Jonathan Demuth, Product Manager for CinCraft at ZEISS. “We want to close these gaps in communication by offering a reliable and predictable lens look solution.”
The development is part of a broader trend in the industry toward realism in digitally rendered images, and it aligns with growing demand for cinematic fidelity across production tiers. Even consumer tools like Apple’s “Cinematic Mode” for iPhones attempt to mimic real lens behavior — though those rely on software estimation and typically lack the subtle nuances of physical optics. ZEISS’ approach, on the other hand, is rooted in its decades of precision lens engineering, aiming to deliver the kind of look directors and DPs expect — not just shallow depth of field, but the correct bokeh shape, breathing, aberrations, and optical softness that define a lens’ character.
The software is currently in development and forms part of the expanding CinCraft ecosystem, which already includes tools like CinCraft Mapper for lens distortion and shading data, and CinCraft Scenario, a real-time camera tracking system for virtual production. While ZEISS is building the tool based on its own lenses, the system is not limited to ZEISS glass — users will be able to create and apply custom lens looks and even layer enhancements for stylized results.
At FMX, ZEISS presents the new technology in a session with VFX veteran Nicolas Borens, Head of 2D Film at MPC Paris, who has been testing the tool and offered early insights into its potential impact on production pipelines. A hands-on demo is also available at the ZEISS booth in the FMX Marketplace. FMX runs until May 9 in Stuttgart, Germany.
While this is a technology demonstration and there is no public release date yet, ZEISS is inviting artists and studios to follow developments on their official page for the Virtual Lens Tech.
Frequent followers of our weekly CineD Focus Check podcast may have heard me speculate about something very similar to this: an app for cameras or phones that lets you “fake” depth-of-field characteristics using a database of actual lenses—applied to digital video in real time while shooting, or altered after the fact. I’m glad to see a lens company like ZEISS being one of the first to move in this direction, rather than a software or phone manufacturer.
Of course, implementing this technology into cameras or phones would impose certain restrictions on image acquisition. The footage would likely have to be captured at a stopped-down aperture—essentially keeping everything in focus—before the lens look could be applied. That, in turn, limits its use in low-light scenarios where you’d normally need to open your aperture to expose properly.
That said, with sensor sensitivity continuing to improve, this limitation is becoming less relevant—something we’re already witnessing in the increasingly impressive low-light performance of flagship smartphones, despite their tiny sensors.
Whether we like it or not, we need to brace ourselves for a future in which everyone—yes, even your mum—can apply the “look” of an ARRI Master Prime (or virtually any lens in existence) directly on their phone. No, it will never be exactly the same as the real thing, but let’s be honest: only about 5% of us—professional film people—will be able to tell the difference. And that percentage will shrink even further as the technology advances.
This is yet another step in the ongoing democratization of filmmaking technology. The tools we use matter less and less; it already almost doesn’t matter what device you shoot your films or videos on. That shift will only accelerate with technologies like this. So let’s embrace the tools and their possibilities—instead of fearing or dismissing them.
