Tamron has announced the availability of its 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD for Nikon Z mount and Canon RF mount. Those will go on sale later this year, on August 28 and September 26, respectively. The lens was previously available for Sony E-mount and Fujifilm X-mount systems.
This new zoom lens offers a focal length range (full-frame equivalent) of 27-450mm on Nikon APS-C bodies and 28.8-480mm on Canon APS-C cameras. The optical design consists of 19 elements in 15 groups with a 67mm filter thread. The Nikon Z mount weighs 635g, while the Canon RF mount weighs 625g. The Nikon version measures 127.6mm, while the Canon RF version measures 123.6mm.
The lens incorporates Tamron’s VXD linear motor autofocus system and VC image stabilisation. It has a minimum focusing distance of 0.15m (5.9in) at the wide end, achieving a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2, notable for a superzoom lens. The Canon RF version includes a dedicated AF/MF and VC on/off switches. Both mount versions support firmware updates via the Tamron Lens Utility software.
The lens features moisture-resistant construction with fluorine coatings on the front elements to repel oil and water. According the the company, special lens elements are incorporated to maintain edge-to-edge optical performance across the zoom range. (specifically four LD (Low Dispersion) and three hybrid aspherical lens elements).
The 16.6x zoom range covers wide-angle through ultra-telephoto in a single lens. However, the variable F/3.5-6.3 aperture limits low-light performance at longer focal lengths. The relatively compact form factor and close focusing capability may appeal to travel and nature photographers seeking to minimise kit size.
Both lens variants are now available for pre-order. The weather-resistant construction and focal length range position this as a single-lens solution for wildlife, bird, and travel photography, where lens changes may be impractical.
The new Tamron 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD lens will be available for Nikon Z mount on August 28th, and for Canon RF mount on September 26th, this year.
