Godox has released a detailed walkthrough video for the KNOWLED MG4K, offering an in-depth look at the 2,000W bi-color COB fixture that the company positions as a 4K HMI equivalent. We first covered the MG4K back in September and discussed it at IBC 2025, but this new video from Godox ambassador David Valente provides additional context on the fixture’s efficiency claims, thermal design, and practical setup workflow.

The walkthrough arrives as the MG4K reaches wider availability, giving potential buyers and rental houses a closer look at what Godox describes as class-leading efficiency in the high-output LED segment. For those who missed our earlier coverage, the fixture draws 2,000W while claiming output comparable to traditional 4K HMI units that require twice the power consumption.

Efficiency claims explained

The video addresses a question many gaffers and DPs have been asking: how can a 2,000W LED match a 4K HMI? According to Valente, the answer lies in the MG4K’s COB efficiency rating of 110 lumens per watt. He notes that while some competing COBs operate in the 60-80 lm/W range, this higher efficiency allows the fixture to generate more usable light from less power consumption.

Valente makes an interesting point about how the industry evaluates lighting output. For years, wattage served as a reliable shorthand for brightness, but as LED efficiency improves, this metric becomes less meaningful. Godox opted for HMI equivalency naming because it resonates with experienced crews who use HMIs as their reference point for high-output lighting.

The practical benefit extends beyond raw output numbers. Running on 2,000W means the MG4K can operate on a standard 20-amp household circuit, eliminating the need for dedicated power distribution that traditional 4K HMIs require. For location work, this translates to simpler logistics and potentially smaller generator requirements.

The 63mm COB and optical performance

One detail emphasized in the walkthrough is the MG4K’s 63mm light-emitting surface, which Godox describes as the smallest in its class for this output level. A smaller COB acts as a closer approximation to a point source, which has significant implications for optical accessories.

When used with the optional MGR15 15Β° reflector, the fixture produces 124,000 lux at 5m at 5600K, representing a 36.7x brightness enhancement over the open-face output. The 30Β° MGR30 reflector delivers 25,600 lux at the same distance and color temperature. This concentration factor depends heavily on having a compact light source that sits precisely at the reflector’s focal point, which is where the small COB diameter becomes advantageous.

The fixture’s 110Β° native beam angle provides broad, even coverage when used without modifiers, making it suitable for bounce lighting or filling large spaces.

Thermal management for extended shoots

The walkthrough dedicates significant attention to the MG4K’s cooling system, which Godox claims improves heat dissipation by 67% compared to previous designs. Valente describes this as essential for maintaining consistent color and brightness during long shooting days.

High-output LEDs face a fundamental challenge: pushing more lumens from a compact COB generates substantial heat, which can cause color shift and reduced output if not managed effectively. The MG4K’s Advanced Blending Architecture aims to minimize energy loss while preventing the thermal buildup that degrades performance over time.

Both the light head and separate controller carry IP65 ratings for dust and water resistance. As we discussed at IBC 2025, this weather sealing opens up exterior shooting possibilities without requiring additional weatherproofing measures. Notably, some sources list the rating as IP67, so crews should verify the exact specification for their specific use case.

Control options and connectivity

The walkthrough video demonstrates the MG4K’s control pathways through its separate light controller unit. Options include wired DMX for traditional reliability, wireless DMX via Lumen Radio CRMX for cable-free operation, and Ethernet connectivity supporting both sACN and Art-Net protocols.

For simpler setups, Bluetooth control through Godox’s phone app is available with NFC pairing, allowing users to tap their phone against the fixture for automatic connection. The controller’s separation from the light head improves weight distribution during rigging, a practical consideration when positioning high-output fixtures overhead.

Color control spans 2,800K to 10,000K with Β±100% green/magenta adjustment, providing the flexibility to match mixed lighting conditions or dial in precise color reproduction. The fixture supports 0.1% dimming steps for fine brightness control.

G-Mount modifier ecosystem

The MG4K uses Godox’s G-Mount system, which the company describes as offering the largest modifier ecosystem in the industry. The walkthrough shows the 30Β° reflector being attached, demonstrating the quick-release mechanism.

Compatible accessories include reflectors in multiple beam angles (15Β°, 20Β°, 30Β°, 45Β°), BeamLight attachments, Fresnel lenses including a motorized option, projection attachments, various softbox configurations (parabolic, rectangular, octa, lantern), adjustable diffusion panels, and Liteflow reflectors. This 16-modifier ecosystem provides extensive shaping options for different production requirements.

Pricing and availability

The Godox KNOWLED MG4K bi-color is available for $4,299 USD, while the MG4K K1 kit with flight case is priced at $4,499 USD. Godox positions the fixture as accessible to owner-operators rather than exclusively rental houses, though the price point still represents a significant investment for smaller productions.
