FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA 55 Firmware Version 1.04 Released – Display Delay of External Monitor Improved

FUJIFILM has released firmware version 1.04 for the GFX ETERNA 55, addressing external monitor display latency and critical stability issues. This update reduces display delay by approximately 40ms when using SDI or HDMI outputs under specific recording configurations, while fixing two significant bugs that could cause the camera to freeze during firmware updates or when powering on with certain settings.

The GFX ETERNA 55 is FUJIFILM’s first dedicated cinema camera, built around a 102MP large format sensor measuring 43.8 x 32.9mm. The camera supports recording up to DCI 8K at 30fps and 4K open gate 4:3 at 48fps, with internal ProRes codecs and external RAW output capabilities. Firmware version 1.04 follows version 1.02’s major update released in December 2025, which introduced external RAW recording to Atomos devices via both HDMI and SDI, alongside numerous menu improvements and bug fixes. The current firmware update delivers tangible improvements for cinematographers relying on external monitoring workflows, particularly when shooting at lower frame rates with specific recording formats. Beyond the latency reduction, version 1.04 resolves stability issues that affected camera operation during firmware installation and startup procedures with PL mount adapters.

External monitor display latency reduced

The headline feature of firmware 1.04 addresses a practical workflow concern for cinematographers using external monitors. FUJIFILM has reduced display delay by approximately 40ms compared to previous firmware versions 1.02 and 1.03, though this improvement applies only under specific recording conditions.

The latency reduction takes effect when using 4K 16:9, 4K 17:9, FHD 16:9, or FHD 17:9 recording formats, with the recording FPS set to 25 or lower, and both IS setting and interframe NR disabled. While these parameters represent common documentary and narrative shooting scenarios, cinematographers working at higher frame rates or in different aspect ratios will not benefit from this particular optimization.

Critical stability fixes

Version 1.04 addresses two bugs that could interrupt production workflows. The first fix prevents the camera from freezing after completing firmware updates when powered solely by the internal NP-W235 rechargeable battery. FUJIFILM now explicitly recommends using external power during firmware installation, and version 1.04 implements automatic power-off after successful updates to prevent potential freeze conditions.

The second fix resolves a startup freeze issue that occurred under a specific combination of conditions: a PL mount adapter attached to the camera body, an external HDMI monitor connected but powered off, triggering the sensor cleaning screen during power-on. This scenario, while relatively narrow, could catch cinematographers in preparation mode before a shoot, potentially delaying production while troubleshooting.

Installation and availability

Firmware version 1.04 is available as a free download from FUJIFILM’s support website. The installation process requires approximately 10 minutes maximum and follows standard FUJIFILM firmware update procedures: checking the current firmware version, preparing a formatted memory card, downloading and copying the firmware file (GXUP0009.DAT) to the card, and then initiating the update through the camera menu.
