Sony FX5 Delayed to Late October or Later in Japan – DVF-EL1 Viewfinder, XLR-H2 Handle and Launch Campaign Also Affected

Sony has put a timeframe on the FX5 delay for the first time since postponing the camera in August: a revised notice on the company’s Japanese website now lists the release as “late October or later”. The same window applies to the DVF-EL1 viewfinder, the XLR-H2 handle unit and the VMC-BNCU1 timecode cable, and there is still no firm date.

The update arrived as a revision, dated September 18, to the postponement notice that Sony Marketing Japan first published on August 18. Until now, the release date line in that notice read “undetermined”. For anyone who has lost track of the sequence: the Sony FX5 was announced on July 22 with a Japanese release set for August 21, Sony warned of possible delivery delays within hours of opening orders in Japan, and the launch was then postponed three days before the camera was due in stores.

What the revised notice says

The text of the notice has not changed. Sony still attributes the postponement to “production reasons” (生産上の都合) without elaborating, apologizes for announcing it so close to the release, and says the date will be communicated once it is confirmed. The only edit sits in the release date line, where “undetermined” has been struck through and replaced with “late October or later” (10月下旬以降). Sony Japan’s FX5 product page now shows the same wording next to both versions of the camera, each marked “Coming Soon”.

Four products are covered: the FX5 itself, the DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder, the XLR-H2 XLR handle unit, and the VMC-BNCU1 timecode adapter cable. Buyers who ordered the body-only ILME-FX5B and planned to add the handle or the viewfinder separately are therefore waiting on the same schedule.

How this compares with dates outside Japan

The notice comes from Sony Marketing Japan and applies to the Japanese market. Sony has not published an equivalent statement for the US or Europe. When we last reported on the FX5 supply situation during IBC 2026, retailer listings pointed to October 15 in the US and October 16 in Europe, and Sony’s Reiko Beitz had said on the show floor that early orders were tracking for mid-October, with around 7,000 orders placed and new orders likely to be fulfilled toward the end of the year or early 2027.

Japan’s “late October or later” sits behind those mid-October dates. Sony has not said whether the Japanese market is on a different allocation or whether the schedule has moved everywhere. At the time of writing, CVP lists both FX5 versions as available to pre-order without a delivery date, and states that delivery dates are set by the manufacturer and can move. Anyone holding an order outside Japan is best served by asking their dealer what Sony has communicated in the past few days.

Launch campaign dates will move too

In the same revision, Sony says the period of its Japanese FX5 launch campaign will change because of the postponement, with new dates to follow. The cashback campaign pays back up to ¥30,000 (around $185) per eligible lens bought together with the camera. Its purchase window was set to run from July 28 to September 28, which would now close a month or more before any customer receives an FX5. According to the campaign terms, cameras and eligible lenses bought during the pre-order period qualify.

Price and availability

In Japan, the FX5 body (ILME-FX5B) is listed at ¥812,900 (around $5,000) and the version with the XLR-H2 handle unit (ILME-FX5) at ¥900,900 (around $5,500), both including tax, with the release now scheduled for late October or later. Elsewhere, the body is priced at $4,898 / €5,399 / £4,699, and the kit with the XLR handle at $5,498 / €5,999 / £5,199; European and UK prices include VAT.
