New Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 Full Frame Art Lens

Sigma adds yet another fast ultra-wide-angle zoom to their lineup of Art labeled full frame lenses. This time around, it’s the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM Art lens. Let’s see how it fits the lineup!

Sigma 14-24mm
The new lens is not as wide as the already available 12-24mm f/4 DG HSM Art lens, but it is faster by a stop. If you’re on the hunt for a fast super-wideangle zoom lens which also adds lowlight capabilities, the new 14-24mm f/2.8 should get the nod.

Before this lens was available you had to decide whether you lose one stop of incoming light when framing up a wide shot and go with the 12-24mm f/4 or swap lenses for every shot and take a set of fast primes, for example the 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art lens. Now Sigma has closed the gap and offers a full lineup of fast f/2.8 zooms: 14-24mm, 24-35mm and 24 – 70mm. All three lenses are covering a full frame sensor (hence the DG in the name) and all three belong to the highly acclaimed Art series. The in-between zoom 24-35mm is f/2 if you want to take lowligh capabilities even further.

Sigma 14-24mm
The Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 Art lens is designed for 50-megapixel plus cameras (UHD is around 8.3 MP) for high-resolution image quality. Internally, 3 FLD and 3 SLD glass elements work hand in hand with 3 aspherical lens elements. An additional large-diameter aspherical element reduces chromatic aberration. Just like the other lenses of the Art series, Sigma claims extremely sharp images with minimal distortion throughout the whole zoom range. Fast autofocus (HSM) is also on board.

Since we’re not studio photographers but working indie filmmakers, the dust- and splash-proof construction with special sealing at the mount connection and rings is here to give us a little peace of mind when taking this lens out into the wild.

Pricing and Availability

This lens is clearly a photo lens and not so much a cine lens. Attaching screw-on front filters will be tricky with this Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 since the front element juts a little bit. Hopefully we’ll see a cine version of it in the near future and I wouldn’t consider that unlikely, since a cine version of 24-35mm f/2 is already available.

Sigma also offers a new service for this lens, called front conversion service:

Converting the petal-type hood of the 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM Art to an exclusive round component allows for the lens to be used in various VR scenarios without the risk of interfering with other lenses in the VR rig or undesired shadows in the content.

You need to send the lens in order to do this but that way your warranty won’t void. Prices for the lens itself or the front conversion service are not yet available.
