Accsoon, who have recently released the SeeMo HDMI iPhone adapter, announced a partnership with Zacuto, an electronic viewfinder (EVF) and camera rig manufacturer. Together they will develop an EVF solution using hardware components from both companies in combination to use an iPhone as a viewfinder on a camera. Sounds pretty interesting, let’s have a closer look!
If you haven’t heard of the Accsoon SeeMo HDMI iPhone adapter, to briefly summarize: it allows you to use the screen of your iPhone as a monitor solution for your camera. Please check out this article and also watch our review if you are not familiar with the adapter.
Zacuto has been known for its electronic viewfinders (EVF) solutions, like the Gratical Eye or the Kameleon Pro. But Zacuto also introduced a smartphone viewfinder, the Smart Z-Finder, on Kickstarter. In case you missed it, check out this article and watch our interview with Steve Weiss from Zacuto about the Smart Z-Finder and filming with smartphones in general.
The two companies announced a technical partnership to combine their systems to use an Accsoon SeeMo with an iPhone in combination with a Zacuto Z-Finder. If you have an iPhone, you’ll know, that it already has an excellent screen with high resolution, good contrast, a nice form factor, and a built-in battery, and you could use it as an EVF solution on your camera rig. Yes, it’s also your phone, but you shouldn’t be on it while working behind the camera anyway.
The Zacuto Z-Finder with dedicated phone mounting solutions might provide an even better image than just the iPhone on its own. Especially in outdoor situations with bright daylight, this could make a big difference. Accsoon is developing a custom interface that is specifically designed for the Zacuto Z-Finder. It is dedicated to image magnification, as well as with functions for waveform and peaking. All this should be available without the need to remove your eye from the viewfinder.
You might consider staying flexible and nowadays it is quite important to be able to switch between the classic horizontal 16:9 format, to the upright social media video format. This monitor solution is designed to be flipped by 90 degrees without any problems.
We don’t have any pricing or shipping information available as of writing this article. In case you are planning on heading to this year’s NAB Show, a prototype of the Zacuto EVF solution for SeeMo will be unveiled.
What do you think about the partnership between Accsoon and Zacuto? Have you used a Zacuto EVF or the Accsoon SeeMo HDMI iPhone adapter before? Would you be interested in using your iPhone as an EVF? Please leave us your thoughts in the comment section below.
