Angelbird Next-Generation AV PRO microSD V30 Card Announced - Designed for Drones and Action Cameras

Angelbird has released the next-generation AV PRO microSD V30, a microSDXC UHS-I memory card designed for drone and action camera users. This card supports 8K video recording with sustained write speeds up to 175 MB/s and features Stable Stream technology for consistent, drop-free performance across capacities ranging from 128GB to 1TB.

We’ve covered Angelbird’s storage solutions extensively, including their factory tour showing how memory cards are made, their CFexpress v4 Type B cards, the SSD2GO PKT portable drives, and the Performance Card Reader CFexpress B. The Austrian company has built a reputation for reliable media solutions, and its latest microSD offering aims to deliver professional-grade performance for aerial and action shooters.

What sets the new AV PRO microSD V30 apart

The AV PRO microSD V30 represents a significant upgrade over the previous generation, primarily through its 8K recording capability and substantially increased write speeds. Where the original AV PRO microSD V30 topped out at 80 MB/s sustained write speed with a 6K maximum resolution, the new version pushes sustained write performance to 175 MB/s on the 512GB and 1TB models, with maximum write speeds matching that figure. For the 256GB capacity, sustained and maximum write speeds reach 140 MB/s, while the 128GB model achieves 75 MB/s.

Read performance stands at 210 MB/s sustained and maximum across all capacities, ensuring fast offload times when transferring footage to editing systems. This speed increase matters for workflows beyond just recording. DJI drones typically write at sustained speeds up to 120 Mbps (15 MB/s) for their current consumer lineup, so the card’s capabilities extend well beyond most drone requirements, but the real benefit comes during data transfers. Getting 4K or 8K footage off cards quickly can make the difference between making a deadline and missing it.

Compatibility and workflow integration

Angelbird has engineered the AV PRO microSD V30 specifically for DJI drones, Insta360 360-degree cameras, and GoPro action cameras. DJI’s recommended specifications call for UHS-I Speed Class 3 (U3) or higher cards, with most current models supporting up to 1TB capacity. The V30 rating (minimum sustained write speed of 30 MB/s) exceeds these requirements across all four capacity options, while the A2 application performance class certification ensures the card performs well beyond just video recording.

Insta360’s camera lineup, including models like the X4, X5, and ONE RS, requires UHS-I V30 cards with exFAT formatting and specifically warns against using UHS-II or UHS-III cards (they might be incompatible). The AV PRO microSD V30 fits these requirements perfectly, supporting 8K recording on Insta360 cameras that can shoot at those resolutions.

GoPro’s latest cameras, including the HERO13 Black, now recommend V30 and A2-rated cards as of their September 2025 specification update (previously they specified UHS-3). The HERO13 Black writes at a maximum data rate of 150 Mbps (18.75 MB/s) for its highest-quality modes, well within the card’s capabilities. GoPro supports cards up to 1TB capacity, matching Angelbird’s maximum offering.

Stable Stream technology and reliability

According to the company, Angelbird’s Stable Stream technology delivers consistent read and write performance throughout the card’s entire capacity, rather than experiencing the speed degradation that can occur with some cards as they fill up. For drone and action camera users, this translates to predictable recording behavior whether the card is empty or nearly full. Drop-free performance matters when capturing unrepeatable moments like aerial establishing shots or action sequences.

The card’s construction includes protection against moisture, extreme temperatures (-25°C to 85°C operating, -40°C to 85°C storage), dust, shock, x-rays, magnets, ESD, and electrical overload. The sticker-free design prevents potential jams or card ejection issues that can occur when stickers separate from the card body inside cameras. This durability focus makes sense for devices used in outdoor environments, underwater housings, or extreme conditions where equipment takes a beating.

A2 rating and extended use cases

The A2 (Application Performance Class 2) certification indicates the card meets specific random read and write IOPS (input/output operations per second) requirements, ensuring smooth app performance when used in Android smartphones, tablets, or gaming consoles like the Nintendo Switch. While marketed primarily for cameras, this versatility expands the card’s utility. A2 cards guarantee minimum random read speeds of 4000 IOPS and random write speeds of 2000 IOPS, along with a minimum sustained sequential write speed of 10 MB/s.

For content creators who use their smartphones as B-cameras or need expandable storage on Android devices, the same card can serve multiple roles across a production. Gaming applications benefit from the improved loading times and smoother gameplay that A2-rated cards provide.

Capacity options and storage calculations

The four capacity options (128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB) cover different shooting scenarios and budgets. At 8K resolution, data rates can reach 100-200 Mbps or higher, depending on the codec and frame rate. A 512GB card would hold approximately 5-10 hours of 8K footage at typical bitrates, though exact capacity varies by codec efficiency and scene complexity. For 4K recording at 100 Mbps, a 256GB card stores roughly 5.5 hours of footage.

The pricing structure (128GB at $89.99 for the base model shown on Angelbird’s site) positions these cards competitively against other V30-rated options from SanDisk, Lexar, and Samsung. The included 3-year limited warranty and free in-house data recovery service (activated within 30 days of purchase) add value beyond the initial purchase, addressing one of the most catastrophic failures a production can face: lost footage.
