ARRI Sells Claypaky, Refocuses on Core Filmmaking Technologies – Stage Lighting Brand Moves to EK Lights

ARRI Sells Claypaky, Refocuses on Core Filmmaking Technologies – Stage Lighting Brand Moves to EK Lights

In a strategic move to sharpen its focus on core competencies in motion picture and broadcast technology, ARRI sells Claypaky to EK Inc. The stage and entertainment lighting subsidiary will be acquired by EK Lights (EK Inc.), a global player in the entertainment lighting industry.

More acquisition news, on the heels of the RØDE / Freedman Group acquisition of Lectrosonics, reach us this week: The sale marks the end of a short but notable chapter following ARRI’s acquisition of Claypaky from ams OSRAM in late 2022.

A short but ambitious partnership

ARRI originally acquired Claypaky in December 2022 to expand its footprint beyond film and broadcast into the live entertainment sector. With Claypaky’s globally recognized brand and product range—including moving head fixtures, color changers, and theatrical lighting—ARRI aimed to offer comprehensive lighting solutions across both cinematic and live event markets. At the time, ARRI emphasized shared values in technological innovation, market leadership, and passion for professional lighting.

Short-lived: in March 2023, Claypaky CEO Marcus Graser and ARRI Chairman of the Executive Board, Dr. Matthias Erb, shook hands over the completed acquisition of Claypaky from ams OSRAM. Just over two years later, ARRI is selling Claypaky again. Image credit: ARRI

However, just over two years later, ARRI has decided to return its full strategic focus to its core filmmaking business, citing evolving priorities in imaging, lighting, and virtual production technologies.

Claypaky finds a new home with EK Lights

The new owner, EK Lights, is an established manufacturer in the entertainment lighting industry and operates one of the most advanced production and development facilities in the field. They are based in China and view Claypaky—and its theatrical sub-brand ADB—as a strong strategic fit to expand its global footprint, especially in Europe.

Raymond Chen, CEO of EK Inc., stated: “The acquisition of Claypaky significantly enriches our portfolio. The brand’s Italian design legacy, coupled with our manufacturing and R&D capacity, positions us well to shape the future of entertainment lighting on a global scale.”

Claypaky headquarters remain in Italy

While integration details are still to be finalized, Claypaky will retain its headquarters in Seriate, Italy, along with its local R&D and operations teams. According to the companies involved, this ensures continuity in innovation and product development, while EK’s global infrastructure is expected to enable greater scalability and reach.

Marcus Graser, CEO of Claypaky, acknowledged the impact of the ARRI partnership: “We are grateful for our time with ARRI and the exchange of expertise with their motion picture division. Looking ahead, EK’s robust industrial capabilities will allow us to explore new opportunities for product development and market expansion.”

Why ARRI sells Claypaky: sharpening focus on filmmaking technology

This divestment aligns with ARRI’s broader strategy to concentrate on its core offerings in cinema cameras, lenses, broadcast lighting, and virtual production systems. With its headquarters in Munich and a global presence through ARRI Rental and international subsidiaries, ARRI continues to serve the professional filmmaking community with high-end imaging tools and workflow solutions.

At a time where traditional filmmaking production is under intense economic pressure, it doesn’t some at a surprise that ARRI decided to refocus around what they are best known for: high-end cinema technology solutions.

Chris Richter, Managing Director of ARRI, said: “This decision is part of our strategic realignment. Claypaky’s future is bright with a partner who understands its legacy and has the resources to elevate it further—while we continue innovating for filmmakers worldwide.”

The transaction is expected to close in the coming months, pending regulatory approval.
