Behringer FLOW 4V is a compact digital mixer and audio recorder designed for film and video production. It offers four balanced XLR / 1/4″ TRS microphone inputs with up to +70 dB of gain, 10 tracks, timecode, switchable +48 V phantom power, low input noise, and a wide 140 dB dynamic range suitable for dialogue and location recording. Further, it supports 24-bit and 32-bit float recording at 48 kHz, covers common film and broadcast frame rates from 23.98 to 60 fps, and includes micro-HDMI with camera-controlled record start to simplify on-set operation and audio-video synchronization. Additional features include stereo and headset monitoring outputs, a stereo auxiliary input, USB audio interface, Bluetooth audio support, and USB-C Power Delivery.
On top of the many offered models of audio mixers and recorders from companies such as Zoom, Sound Devices, and Tascam, the German audio equipment manufacturer Behringer also caters to filmmakers. The recently announced FLOW 4V audio mixer and recorder aims to offer an impressive list of features in a compact and affordable body. Let’s take a look at the details.
The FLOW 4V audio mixer provides a frequency response of 5 Hz to 22 kHz (±1 dB) and an input dynamic range of up to 140 dB (142 dB A-weighted). This range allows the system to accommodate both quiet dialogue and higher-level sound sources without excessive noise or distortion, which is particularly important in uncontrolled shooting environments.
Four balanced XLR / 1/4″ TRS combo inputs are available for microphones or line-level sources. Each input offers up to +70 dB of gain, supporting low-output dynamic microphones as well as condenser microphones via switchable +48 V phantom power. The stated equivalent input noise (EIN) of −130 dBu (−132 dBu A-weighted) indicates low self-noise, which is relevant for spoken dialogue and subtle ambient recordings.
Maximum input levels of +18 dBu on XLR and +29.5 dBu on TRS allow the connection of professional audio sources without external attenuation. Crosstalk rejection of −110 dB at 1 kHz further supports clean multichannel recordings.
The FLOW 4V supports 24-bit and 32-bit float recording at a 48 kHz sample rate. For filmmakers, 32-bit float recording does not require gain setting during capture, allowing level adjustments to be made later in post-production without clipping or loss of detail.
Frame rate compatibility includes 23.98, 24, 25, 29.98, 30, 50, and 60 fps, covering common cinema, broadcast, and online delivery standards. This ensures that audio recording can be aligned consistently with a wide range of camera systems and production formats.
A micro-HDMI port with CEC support allows for camera-controlled record start, enabling the FLOW 4V to begin recording automatically when a compatible camera starts rolling. This feature simplifies on-set operation and can reduce manual errors during multi-take shoots.
Monitoring and output options include a stereo 1/8″ TRS output and a headset input/output via 1/8″ TRRS, suitable for headphones with or without an integrated microphone. The headphone amplifier is specified to deliver up to 110 mW at 30 Ω, providing a sufficient level for monitoring in typical production environments. An additional stereo 1/8″ AUX input allows the connection of secondary audio sources, such as reference feeds or wireless receivers.
In addition to standalone operation, the FLOW 4V functions as a USB 2.0 audio interface via a USB-C connector, providing 12 input channels and 2 output channels to a host computer. This allows the device to be used for direct recording into editing or audio software, as well as for voice-over recording or post-production tasks.
The unit also includes Bluetooth 4.0 dual-mode connectivity, supporting the A2DP profile. Bluetooth operation is specified for short-range use (up to 12 meters without interference) and may be used for monitoring or playback in certain scenarios.
The FLOW 4V is powered via USB-C with Power Delivery, with a stated power consumption of approximately 10 W. This allows it to be operated from USB-C power adapters or battery packs commonly used in mobile production setups.
Physically, the unit measures 53 × 184 × 128 mm and weighs 800 g, placing it within a size and weight range suitable for bag-based audio setups, tripod mounting, or integration into compact camera rigs.
The available accessories include the optional FLOW 4VIO expansion module (adding 4 microphone preamps, 2 headphone outputs, and USB audio/MIDI) as well as a FLOW 4BAG carrying bag, or the original Orca bag.
The Behringer FLOW 4V costs $279, but there is no further information about its availability just yet. We will update the article as soon as we know more. The FLOW 4BAG costs $49, and the FLOW 4VIO expansion module sets you back $199.
