Birth of a Camera: FUJIFILM GFX 100 – Part 1

June 6th, 2019

EDIT: Part 2 of our documentary is now online: Watch it by clicking here.

The FUJIFILM GFX 100 was officially introduced during May 2019 (See our First Impression and Sample Footage article here), and we were lucky enough to document parts of the process of bringing this camera to realisation by following the FUJIFILM team for a considerable amount of time.

For the last 8 months FUJIFILM was kind enough to let us closely monitor the birth of their new flagship large format sensor creation, the GFX 100. For that specific project, we traveled to Japan several times and are now proud to present the outcome to you. This is the first of the two-parts documentary we have created. The idea was to bring our filming community a unique behind-the-scenes look into the camera creation process and also get to know the people behind that, their dilemmas, challenges and emotions (This is also the right place to thank the FUJIFILM staff that participated in the film).

– In part 1 we follow the process of designing  the camera.

– In the up comping part 2, please join me when I visit the factory where the camera is actually being made.

Full disclosure: This project was initiated by cinema5D. FUJIFILM (Alongside many other distinguished manufacturers) is running a paid banner campaign on our site, which of course helps us finance our day to day operations – nevertheless,  the production cost of this documentary was fully self-funded by cinema5D.

Johnnie thanks so much for all the info and experiences. Nice to see. 21/06 we have the introduction here in the Netherlands. The cameras will be available the following week. I’m curious about part 2. Do you put that online for the 21st ??? Thank you so much.

Great piece, I really liked it. I met and talked a bit with Toshihida at NAB. It was impressive that he and the other senior management were interested in meeting and listening to users. Their approach was refreshing next to some other big companies. Users know and will tell you what they want, fujifilm is willing to try to make it happen. That’s makes all the difference in the world.

Johnnie:

Excellent film-making and storytelling! I’m so impressed with the access that Fujifilm gave you and you told their story in a very compelling and interesting way. I wish there were more coverage like this instead of everyone just re-framing the press release or posting pieces of the company produced video demo, this is so much more compelling.

I hope the GFX100 is a big hit for Fuji and that after this they go for a digital cinema camera. I own the XT-3 and REALLY enjoy shooting with it, I think they could bury the big three in the mid-level, sub-$10,000.00 segment against the FS7 MKII, C300 MKII, EVA 1 area if they put their minds to it.

This is a wonderful documentary. Congratulations! Suddenly the many people behind the Camera development, marketing, engineering etc get a face. Fujifilm is an interesting place to work – that’s for sure. Amazing! Edit and Sound is great as well.

Thanks a lot and looking forward to Part 2 and more such documentaries.

Cheers

Johnnie. Thank you so much for this. Really interesting and I feel as open as a documentary about BTS in R&D can be. I really respect Fuji as a company and if was not as invested in Canon would love to be on their ship. Embracing S35 and skipping FF is I think a wise and brave discussion. Having very comparable image quality across their line of cameras and charing mostly for usability and frame size is another thing I really appreciate in Fuji.

Really looking forward to the next part.

Bravo!

Awesome behind the scenes story about the engineering hurdles Fujifilm had to overcome to make this camera! Thank you for these videos.

Great film, Johnnie! There are probably many of us that dream about working behind the curtain of camera design and influencing the market. It’s great to get a peek at what Fujifilm are up to. Did you ask them when they plan on making a cine camera? ?
