DJI’s latest Mavic 4 Pro firmware update adds lossless vertical recording, in-flight focal length switching, and dynamic Home Point tracking when paired with the RC 2, alongside controller and Fly app updates.

DJI has rolled out aircraft firmware update v01.00.0300 for the Mavic 4 Pro, which introduces some modes that filmmakers have been waiting for – including myself, as pointed out in my initial hands-on review of the Mavic 4 Pro (video embedded at the bottom of this article.)

Finally: switching focal lengths during recording

The standout upgrade allows users to switch between the camera’s focal lengths during recording, whether in Normal or Slow Motion mode. For drone cinematographers, this eliminates a common interruption when reframing and enables smoother, more continuous aerial storytelling. And it’s simply wasting less time which can be crucial if you fear to miss a moment.

New options for vertical creators

Portrait mode now supports both lossless and cropped vertical recording. This gives social-media-oriented filmmakers a ready-to-share 9:16 image without sacrificing resolution or detail. The “lossless” option preserves the full sensor readout for maximum image quality and can be found under Portrait preferences after updating.

Dynamic home point for mobile shoots

When used with the DJI RC 2 remote controller, the Mavic 4 Pro can now automatically update its return-to-home position as the pilot moves. This is particularly useful for tracking subjects from a moving platform—whether that’s a boat, car, or hiking route—ensuring a safer and smarter return path.

To unlock all new functions, pilots must update all components in sync:

• DJI Fly app: v1.18.0

After installation, the drone resets certain camera parameters, so it’s worth double-checking color profile, exposure settings, and recording resolution before the next flight.

Availability and US pricing situation

While the Mavic 4 Pro has yet to receive an official US release, the drone is now appearing through third-party resellers and importers. Some bundles – including Fly More Combos with the RC 2 – are approaching international retail levels, making the system feel more attainable than at launch, even if DJI’s U.S. warranty doesn’t apply.
