DJI Transmission - Independent Wireless Video and Control System Announced

The DJI Transmission is the company’s first independent wireless video system with O3 Pro transmission technology. It achieves up to 20,000-foot on-ground transmission distance, low-latency, 1080p 60fps video. The system can also be used to control the new DJI RS 3 Pro gimbal and camera. It will be available in September for €2,299.

The Chinese tech giant DJI has announced a bunch of new stuff today. In this article, I will focus on the DJI Transmission – a standalone wireless video transmission system. The two new one-handed gimbals – the DJI RS 3 and RS 3 Pro – are covered in a separate article, so make sure to check those out as well. Now, let’s take a look at the DJI Transmission.

DJI Transmission – O3 Pro wireless video system

DJI Transmission is the company’s first independent wireless video solution based on Ronin 4D‘s video transmission technology, and it is designed to combine reception, monitoring, control, and recording into one device.

According to DJI, the O3 Pro transmission technology enables the system to offer a 20,000-foot (6km) on-ground transmission distance (FCC) with end-to-end ultra-low latency (down to 68ms). Video is transmitted in 1080p 60fps (up to 50Mbps bitrate) and provides live audio monitoring at 16-bit 48 kHz.

On top of the traditional 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz settings, a DFS band with up to 23 channel options is available with compliant and interference-free transmission channels. A built-in frequency sweeper automatically scans the current electromagnetic environment for the best wireless channel, instantly switching channels. When necessary, users can also manually select an appropriate channel to avoid interference between devices.

The transmitter has HDMI input as well as SDI input and output ports with loop out. The receiver monitor has HDMI input and output, as well as SDI output. Both TXand RX can be powered by DJI’s WB37 battery or by an NP-F battery. There will be third-party V port expansion plates available. The transmitter can also be powered directly from the RS 3 Pro.

The DJI Transmission system supports one transmitter with multiple receivers, as well as two transmission modes to address different needs:

  • Control mode – Monitoring can be carried out from two receivers at the same time, while the gimbal and camera can also be controlled remotely.
  • Broadcast mode – An unlimited number of receivers are allowed, which is suitable for large crews with various units such as lighting, art department, and props. In broadcast mode, the range is limited to a maximum of around 13,000-foot (4km).

On large sets, DJI Transmission can work simultaneously with ten or more transmitters sending signals to transmit to ten devices, creating a synchronized system.

Control system for DJI RS 3 Pro

When used with the new RS 3 Pro, DJI Transmission can work as a gimbal and camera controller.

The DJI High-Bright Remote Monitor with its 7-inch, 1500-nit touchscreen includes an integrated receiver as well as a built-in gyroscopic sensor that acts as a standalone motion controller for the RS 3 Pro. And, when combined with the Ronin 4D Hand Grips, the operator of a RS 3 Pro stabilizer can control the gimbal, focus, exposure, and start/stop a recording with both hands.

On top of simultaneous access to video time codes, the monitor can also record and playback 1080p 60fps H.264 footage. Additionally, DJI Transmission works seamlessly with DJI Master Wheel and Force Pro.

Price and availability

DJI Transmission will be available for purchase in September this year. The DJI Transmission Combo retails for around €2,299 (with VAT) and includes one DJI video transmitter, DJI high-bright remote monitor, remote monitor hood, installation toolkit, protector case, two WB37 intelligent batteries, one WB37 battery charging hub, as well as various cables and battery adapters. The independent video transmitter and high-bright remote monitor will also be available for separate purchase and retail for around €1,099 (with VAT) and around €1,299 (with VAT), respectively.
