DPReview is Saved - Acquisition by Gear Patrol

DPReview, one of the leading online platforms focused on digital photography technology and news, has just announced that they are changing hands and are now saved thanks to their acquisition by Gear Patrol. DPReview’s entire editorial, tech, and business team will continue moving forward with the website.

Back in March 2023, DPReview announced that they were closing. This sad news surprised us all, as DPReview has been online for more than 25 years. Without any doubt, if you’re interested in digital photography, this pioneering website is one of the most extensive resources available online for free.

DPReview was supposed not to be updated after April 10th. Still, the team surprisingly kept going, even if some members like Chris and Jordan, who hosted the DPR YouTube channel, joined PetaPixel.

DPReview is Now Gear Patrol’s Property

DPReview, which was the property of Amazon since 2007, is now changing hands and will be operated by Gear Patrol. Gear Patrol is “an award-winning publisher and content studio (…) with its unique blend of product storytelling and service-centric journalism across its core categories of outdoors, tech, watches, motoring, home, and style.” As you can tell, DPReview is much more photography-centric, so both companies have different audiences.

Below is Scott Everett’s statement – General manager at DPReview – about their acquisition by Gear Patrol:

Gear Patrol is a natural home for the next phase of DPReview’s journey, and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish together.

I want to reassure you that we remain firmly committed to what makes DPReview great: the best camera reviews in the business, industry-leading photography news and features, and one of the most active photography communities anywhere on the internet.

This is just the beginning of a new chapter for DPReview and we don’t have all the answers yet, but I’m sharing what we know below and will continue to share information about this change as we get more acquainted with our partners at Gear Patrol.

Thank you for your continued support of our team and legacy. We appreciate it and can’t thank you all enough.

Furthermore, Eric Yang – CEO and founder of Gear Patrol – adds that:

DPReview is the internet’s original center of gravity for photography. As a photography enthusiast, I’ve been an avid reader since its earliest days. We’re honored to receive the baton from Amazon and help the incredible DPReview team craft the next phase of their story. Editorial integrity and the passionate community are the heart of DPReview and we plan to uphold that charter.

In a nod to the exceptional team behind DPReview, Gear Patrol Has confirmed that current DPReview employees will continue and work to maintain the commitment to high standards and grow its renowned body of experts, creators, and expert content.

At CineD, we’re delighted by that announcement and wish a long new life to DPReview and the entire team in this upcoming journey at Gear Patrol.
