DZOFILM Vespid Prime II First Look – Affordable Full Frame Prime Lenses

At Cine Gear 2025, we stopped by the DZOFILM booth to talk with Bruno Huang about the company’s latest announcement: the Vespid Prime II. At launch, there will be six focal lengths ranging from 18 to 105mm, with a faster T1.9 maximum aperture compared to the first Vespid generation, and the addition of the Cooke /i Technology. So, let’s take a closer look at these compact and affordable prime lenses!

The original Vespid primes were released in October 2020 and really put DZOFILM on the map for many filmmakers and content creators looking to buy their first set of cinema lenses. In 2022, the company released the Vespid Retro lenses with a new coating and exterior housing for those looking to capture more “vintage-looking” images. However, DZOFILM has since moved to higher-end lenses such as the PAVO 2X anamorphic lenses, or the newly announced Arles Lustre lens set.

DZOFILM is already back, and during CineGear 2025, the company showcased the second generation of one of their most successful products: the Vespid Prime II.

DZOFILM Vespid Prime II – features

Compared to the original DZOFILM Vespid Prime, the second-generation lenses are lighter and slightly shorter. This reduction in weight and size should make them easier to balance on a gimbal, or even use on the DJI Ronin 4D, for example. We have been informed that the lens design, lens elements, and coating have been upgraded in the Vespid Prime II; however, we don’t have more detailed information about these updates.

At launch, the DZOFILM Vespid Prime II lens set will consist of six focal lengths: 18mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 105mm. All lenses have a maximum aperture of T1.9, which is a step up from the previous T2.2 of the original Vespid primes. The lenses are entirely made of metal and feature 0.8 MOD focus and iris gears.

Furthermore, the Vespid Prime II will only be available in PL Mount, with no option to convert the lenses to Canon EF anymore. This change in lens mount is due to the addition of the Cooke /i Technology for lens data communication. The /i Technology enables cameras to record lens metadata during shooting, including focus distance, aperture, zoom position, and more.
