FUJIFILM Firmware Updates Add External Timecode Sync for Cameras and More

FUJIFILM issues a firmware update that will improve exposure consistency with its flagship normal zoom lens, the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR. The update will also allow several cameras to sync timecode using the Atomos AirGlu accessory, UltraSync BLUE. The FT-XH file transmitter grip also gets an update to improve workflow with the new timecode sync functionality.

FUJIFILM seems to be on a mission. Not so long ago, the Japanese manufacturer was mostly recognized for classic photography. FUJIFILM camera design was (and is, in some ways, still) rather nostalgic and reminiscent of film cameras of the seventies. But in the last few years, we have seen tectonic movement. The company’s shift towards hybrid cameras and motion capture is both swift and significant, encompassing both its APS-C (X) line and medium format (GFX). Video specs, resolution, frame, and bit rates – all are important when creating an excellent video camera, but FUJIFILM went the extra mile by implementing some very interesting capabilities. One of these is the Frame.io compatibility, enabling camera-to-cloud functionality in which the FT-XH transmitter grip for the X-H2S and X-H2 plays a key role.

This recent firmware update enables the FT-XH transmitter grip to synchronize cameras by scanning a QR code using a connected tablet through the FUJIFILM Connect App. While the procedure isn’t the quickest, completing it will unlock some intriguing capabilities. There’s also an ability to split the display, showing live feeds of all cameras on set, as well as a “clean” screen. Additional info about installing the update may be found here, as well as a download link.

External timecode sync

The new firmware update will allow several cameras to receive external timecodes delivered via Bluetooth. This is done using the Atomos UltraSync BLUE. The device can sync six cameras simultaneously. FUJIFILM’s flagship cameras will be able to sync timecode using this method. A firmware update is due for both the X-H2S and X-H2. The FT-XH transmitter grip is not required but will elevate the workflow.

FUJIFILM XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR update

The XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR is FUJIFILM’s top normal zoom. It’s robust, has excellent optics, and covers a very useful range with a constant f/2.8 aperture. Designed primarily for stills, the zoom motion sometimes introduces slight exposure changes, flickering, etc. The recent firmware update should remedy this and will work with seven recent FUJIFILM cameras (cameras should also be updated): X-H2S, X-H2, X-T5, X-T4, X-T3, X-S20, and X-S10. Make sure to read the fine print before installation. Some require specific pre-installed firmware and other requirements.

Happy New Year from FUJIFILM

These updates are also included in the company’s 2024 New Year Greeting video, along with some additional teasers and news.
