The dedicated FUJIFILM X half app is now available for download on both iOS and Android, complementing the recently announced X half Compact Digital Camera, which launched globally in May 2025. Designed as an essential companion piece for the unique half-frame-inspired digital camera, the app brings an analog-style workflow into the modern digital era. Let’s take a closer look.
We recently covered the announcement of the new FUJIFILM X half camera, and one thing that stood out was how essential the new app is to making the camera a complete product.
The X half app transforms your smartphone into a personal gallery and control center for the X half camera. Users can browse and transfer images and videos directly to their mobile devices through Bluetooth connectivity, eliminating the need for traditional cable transfers or SD card swapping. The app maintains the film photography aesthetic that the X half camera embodies, allowing photographers to “develop” their digital film rolls in a nostalgic workflow reminiscent of analog photography.
One of the standout features is the app’s ability to create 2-in-1 diptych images, taking advantage of the camera’s vertically oriented 1-inch back-illuminated sensor. This unique capability allows content creators to tell more complex visual stories within a single frame – living up to the camera’s marketing promise of “half the size, twice the story.”
The application offers customization options that mirror the camera’s aesthetic philosophy. Users can choose from two background colors and six different frame styles to showcase their images optimally. This personal gallery approach emphasizes curation and presentation, encouraging photographers to be more selective and intentional with their image selection – a philosophy borrowed directly from film photography practices.
The interface follows FUJIFILM’s established design language while incorporating elements specifically tailored to the half-frame format. The app’s workflow mimics the anticipation and discovery process of film development, where images remain hidden until the “roll” is processed through the application.
Beyond basic image transfer capabilities, the X half app provides seamless geotagging synchronization between the camera and smartphone. Through the Bluetooth connection, location data from the mobile device automatically tags images captured on the camera, providing valuable metadata for travel and documentary photography.
The pairing process requires users to connect their X half camera to their mobile device via Bluetooth, following on-screen instructions within the app. Once established, the connection enables remote browsing of camera contents and selective downloading directly into the device’s native camera roll.
The X half app’s release coincides with the global availability of the FUJIFILM X-HF1 camera, which features a fixed 32mm f/2.8 lens (35mm equivalent) and weighs just 240 grams. This combination of lightweight hardware and sophisticated software represents FUJIFILM’s attempt to bridge the gap between analog photography traditions and modern digital convenience.
The app is particularly crucial for the camera’s “analog mode,” where the rear LCD screen remains blank during shooting, mimicking traditional film camera behavior. In this mode, the smartphone app becomes the primary method for reviewing captured images, maintaining the element of surprise and anticipation that defines film photography.
The X half app is available as a free download from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, with no subscription fees or premium tiers announced at launch.
