GoPro Close-Up Filters for MISSION 1 Announced – PolarPro Diopters from +0.5 to +2

GoPro Close-Up Filters for MISSION 1 Announced – PolarPro Diopters from +0.5 to +2

GoPro has released two close-up filter options for the MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO, made by PolarPro. The diopters slide over the camera’s fixed lens and give a closer focus range with a shallower depth of field. A single +0.5 filter costs $49.99, and a set of three strengths costs $99.99. But what do these filters change on a camera with a fixed 14mm lens?

The new GoPro Close-Up Filter is a single PolarPro +0.5 diopter. The Close-Up Filter Set adds +1 and +2 diopters and a travel case. According to GoPro, the filters use optical-grade, multi-coated glass and slide over the MISSION 1 or MISSION 1 PRO lens, or over an ND filter that is already on the camera. Focus is static, so there is no adjustment to make. Each strength has a fixed focus range: 50 to 150cm / 19.6 to 59in for the +0.5, 45 to 90cm / 17.7 to 35.4in for the +1, and 30 to 50cm / 11.8 to 19.6in for the +2. Both products are available now from GoPro.com.

The MISSION 1 series is GoPro’s line of large-sensor action cameras with a 1-inch 50MP sensor. We covered the MISSION 1 series announcement and, more recently, the free update with a zero-lag shutter and anamorphic support. This year, GoPro was sold to Starman Optical for $285 million, and Nick Woodman wrote after the merger that the cameras are staying. New accessories for the MISSION 1 line are one sign that this is the case.

Three strengths, three working distances

A diopter is a close-up lens: it moves the focus range of the camera nearer. On a fixed-lens camera with a 14mm lens, the subject must be close to get visible background blur. The diopter makes this possible because it moves the plane of focus close to the camera.

GoPro positions the +0.5 as an everyday filter for vlogs, lifestyle and travel footage. Its range starts at 50cm and ends at 150cm. GoPro’s footnote says that it limits the far focus distance to 150cm so that the filter can give subject separation. Thus, a background at a large distance stays out of focus, and this is the effect that GoPro wants.

The +1 gives a range of 45 to 90cm, and the +2 gives 30 to 50cm. With each step, the depth of field becomes shallower and the working distance becomes shorter. The +2 range of 30 to 50cm is a distance for tabletop shots, product shots and detail shots, not for a person who talks to the camera at arm’s length.

Stabilization and limits

GoPro gives one warning for the strongest filter. High-vibration activities and quick camera movements can affect video stabilization when the +2 diopter is on the camera. GoPro does not give more detail. A shallow focus range also means that a subject that moves out of the range goes soft, because the camera cannot refocus past the limits of the diopter.

The compatibility list names the MISSION 1, the MISSION 1 PRO and the MISSION 1 PRO bundles (Grip Edition, Creator Edition and Ultimate Creator Edition). The press release does not list the MISSION 1 PRO ILS, the model with a Micro Four Thirds mount. At NAB 2026, we gave the MISSION 1 PRO ILS one of our CineD Best of Show awards.

Price and availability

The GoPro Close-Up Filter (+0.5) costs $49.99, and the GoPro Close-Up Filter Set (+0.5, +1, +2) costs $99.99. Both are available now globally from GoPro.com and are covered by PolarPro’s Adventure Assurance program. GoPro Premium and Premium+ subscribers get 20% off, but according to GoPro, this subscriber price applies only when the subscription renews. The subscription is available only in some countries.

At the time of writing, B&H and CVP do not list the filters. GoPro has not published a euro price.
