HOVERAir VERSA – Pocket Camera Gimbal and Drone in One: Pro Gear or Gimmick?

HOVERAir VERSA promises to be a hybrid device that combines a handheld pocket gimbal camera and a propeller attachment that transforms into a drone. It is expected to be available soon through an Indiegogo campaign. Could this device show us the future of personal cameras?

HOVERAir is a Chinese tech company known for its compact folding consumer drones, such as the HOVERAir X1, X1 PRO, and X1 PROMAX. Last year, the company also introduced the HOVERAir AQUA, an interesting autonomous waterproof drone.

Recently, HOVERAir teased its newest innovation called VERSA. While we don’t yet have all the specs and features of this device, the concept itself could offer a glimpse into where the future of personal consumer filming devices might be heading. Let’s take a closer look at what VERSA promises to offer.

Flying pocket gimbal

HOVERAir VERSA is essentially a three-axis pocket gimbal camera (similar to the DJI Osmo Pocket series) that can be securely attached to a folding drone base, transforming the entire setup into a drone that looks almost identical to HOVERAir X1 series. In other words, VERSA is a 2-in-1 device: a drone and a pocket gimbal camera.

HOVERAir claims that the VERSA preorders will launch in mid-August through a planned Indiegogo campaign. By then, we should also know the full specs of the camera and the drone base.

Is this the way?

Even without knowing the full specs of the upcoming HOVERAir VERSA, I personally do not expect its image quality to be anywhere near that of the latest-generation DJI Osmo Pocket cameras.

I still think, however, that VERSA is an interesting product – perhaps more of a proof of concept at this stage. I hope the attachment solution proves to be sturdy and reliable enough for everyday use. Secondly, it could be interesting to see whether DJI might consider developing a similar 2-in-1 device in the future.

Flying Osmo Pocket?

The idea of a compact gimbal camera is not entirely new. Who remembers the first DJI Osmo (2015)? While it was not considered a huge success, it certainly gave us a glimpse of what the future could look like. It took DJI several generations of the redesigned Osmo Pocket line, focused on achieving a truly pocket-sized design, before reaching the massive success of the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, which was released back in 2023.

I think the technology just had to get good enough to combine the pocket-sized body and a large-enough image sensor and an efficient image processor, delivering truly impressive image quality in such a small device.

This trend has continued with the latest generation Osmo Pocket cameras. Especially the newly-released Osmo Pocket 4P demonstrates just how far the image quality can be pushed while still keeping the overall device extremely compact. So, how does the newly teased HOVERAir VERSA fit into this story? Could this be the future of personal filming devices? Imagine a flying Osmo Pocket 4P.
