ILLUVISION has recently introduced the MAGNA 65-350mm T3.6, which is essentially a repurposed ARRI/FUJINON Alura 45-250mm T2.6 Studio Zoom with a built-in optical expander that upgrades the original Super 35 image circle to cover modern full-frame sensors. It’s now available to order for $12,400.
Back in 2010, ARRI began shipping the Alura 18-80mm T2.6 and 45-250mm T2.6 Studio Zooms, which were conceived to complement the first ALEXA cameras featuring the acclaimed ALEV 3 Super 35 CMOS sensor. The German manufacturer then released the Alura LDS Extender 1.4x to make its Studio Zooms compatible with increasingly popular full-frame cameras.
Fast forward 16 years, and Chinese rehousing company ILLUVISION has decided to undertake a rehousing project to fuse the Alura 45-250mm T2.6 with a custom full-frame expander into a single, modern, massive zoom lens. Let’s take a look!
To extend the original Super 35 image circle and achieve full-frame coverage, ILLUVISION had to integrate a custom 1.4x high-precision expander into its rehousing, effectively turning the MAGNA into a heavy-duty 65-350mm zoom with a constant T3.6 aperture.
According to the company, the MAGNA 65-350mm T3.6 retains the image characteristics of the Alura zoom – which is known for producing sharp images with pleasing color rendition and minimal focus breathing – as well as the same minimum close focus distance (1.2m/4’) and ARRI PL mount.
The barrel of the rehoused lens is made of aerospace-grade aluminum with industry-standard 0.8 MOD focus, iris, and zoom gears paired with highly visible markings. As you’d expect, MAGNA is bulkier and heavier than Alura, featuring a larger 143mm front diameter (134mm on the original lens) and weighing approximately 8.7kg/19.18lbs. Given the massive weight, the lens comes with a large carrying handle to ease operation on set.
The MAGNA 65-350mm T3.6 is now available to order from ILLUVISION. According to the company, there’s no waiting time, and shipping is free. The lens costs $12,400 and comes with a laser-cut foam case.
