KIPON Drop-In Variable ND PL Mount Adapter Announced with a Deep-Recessed Design

KIPON has just introduced a new Variable ND PL adapter for Sony E and Nikon Z mount cameras. Entirely designed and manufactured in Japan, it features a 1.5-7 stop VND filter, a built-in back focus adjustment, and a large intake depth to accommodate PL-mount lenses with a rear-protruding element.

KIPON is a Chinese manufacturer of specialty lens adapters and focal reducers. I’ve had the chance to use their Baveyes 0.7x Pro Lock Adapter for Mamiya 645 lenses, which was recently released in a Nikon Z mount version, and I can testify to the premium build quality of their products.

This time, they’re coming up with a new Variable ND PL mount adapter that seems to solve an issue that most of these adapters have: incompatibility with PL mount lenses with protruding rear optical groups. Let’s take a look!

KIPON PL mount adapter with deep Drop-in VND

The upcoming KIPON Variable ND Filter PL Mount Adapter is available to pre-order in two versions: for Sony E or Nikon Z mount camera bodies. Like other adapters, such as the popular MOFAGE POCO or the Breakthrough Photography Cinema DFM, the mount accommodates a drop-in VND assembly with intensity ranges from 1.5 to 7 stops.

What makes it unique, however, is the positioning of the drop-in VND, which sits as deep as possible into the mount. This deep-recessed design aims at maximizing clearance to ensure compatibility with the widest range of PL-mount lenses, including those with protruding rear elements that might interfere with the VND block.

While exact depth measurements are not available yet, KIPON claims that the adapter is compatible with their Mamiya 645-PL 0.7x Optical Focal Reducer System. This makes for a very interesting setup, merging the benefits of a speedbooster – thus retaining the “medium-format look” of the Mamiyas – with those of a rear-lens filtration system.

Finally, the adapter features a multi-start threaded mechanism for focal flange distance adjustment, and it’s KIPON’s first product to be entirely designed and produced in Japan, including the VND filter. According to the company, this should translate to premium optical quality and great color accuracy.

Price and availability

The new KIPON Variable ND PL mount adapter for Sony E and Nikon Z cameras is now available to pre-order on the manufacturer’s website and should start shipping in mid-August. The official retail price is set at $699, but you can benefit from a 15% discount if you purchase it in a bundle with their 0.7x Pro Lock Adapter for Mamiya 645 lenses.
