Leica SL3 and SL3-S Firmware Update v3.1.1 Released - Adds New Video Formats for C4K and C6K

Leica has recently released two firmware updates, v3.1.1, for their SL3 and SL3-S mirrorless cameras. This firmware update adds multiple new C4K and C6K video recording formats for the SL3 and many user interface improvements for both cameras. So, let’s take a closer look at these firmware updates!

The flagship Leica SL3 mirrorless camera, released in March 2024, features a 60MP full-frame image sensor. It can capture footage up to DCI 8K at 30 frames per second and in ProRes422HQ internally at up to 1080P60.

This competent camera was followed up by the SL3-S earlier this year, a more video-centric camera model that can “only” shoot up to C6K/6K resolutions internally at up to 30P, but with Open Gate capabilities. Furthermore, the SL3-S can capture footage in C6K30P in ProRes422HQ internally. If you missed it, you can watch our Leica SL3-S review here.

Leica SL3 and SL3-S firmware update v3.1.1

Let’s start with the most notable change in firmware update v3.1.1, available only for the SL3 – the addition of new C4K and C6K video recording formats. You’ll now be able to shoot in C6K (5776 x 3056) at up to 30P and C4K (4096 x 2160) at up to 60P in ProRes422HQ internally.

Both cameras will also benefit from other improvements, including:

  • Headphone volume: it is possible to modify the headphone volume via the audio menu in the video section and via the FN button.
  • Magnification control: the joystick can activate/deactivate the magnification function by pressing the joystick.
  • Icon assignments: when changing the icon assignments in the Control Center, the function assignment list will open with the currently assigned option presented in the list as the starting position.
  • Main Menu changes: the former menus Film Style and Video Style (accessible via JPG Settings) were integrated into the Leica Looks menu, and their menu items will now be accessible via the Main Menu.
  • Firmware update process optimization: following a firmware update, all previous settings will remain unchanged, and the dialogue “Do you want to save profiles on SD card?” will no longer be
displayed. A battery charge level of around 25% will now suffice for starting the update process.
