LEICA, the German camera and optics manufacturer, introduces its most compact zoom lens yet, targeting both photographers and videographers with constant f/2.8 aperture performance. Let’s take a closer look.
LEICA Camera AG has announced the new Vario-Elmarit-SL 28β70mm f/2.8 ASPH. positioning it as the most compact and lightweight zoom lens in the SL-System lineup. The lens aims to deliver professional-grade optical performance in a portable package designed for everyday shooting scenarios. Being the company behind the L-Mount standard, this standard zoom lens is aimed at L-Mount camera users.
The new standard zoom maintains a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout its 28-70mm focal range, making it suitable for both stills and video work. The optical construction features 16 elements arranged in 12 groups, with three elements incorporating aspherical surfaces on both sides to enhance image quality and reduce aberrations.
At 572 grams and measuring 102mm in length with a 67mm filter thread diameter, the lens prioritizes portability while maintaining LEICA’s signature build quality. The metal housing provides dust and splash water protection, ensuring durability in various shooting conditions.
According to the company, LEICA’s advanced lens coatings optimize light transmission while minimizing reflections, aimed at delivering enhanced color rendition and contrast. The 28-70mm focal range covers wide-angle to short telephoto perspectives, making it versatile for landscapes, travel photography, and portraiture.
The constant f/2.8 aperture provides consistent exposure settings across the zoom range, particularly beneficial for video applications where exposure changes can be problematic.
Well, it will be easy to think so, BUT there is a noticeable difference between the two lenses. The main one is about the LEICA lens being heavier due to its magnesium and aluminum Full-Metal housing, next to slight differences in lens construction in order to protect against dust and water splash.
The LEICA Vario-Elmarit-SL 28β70mm f/2.8 ASPH. is currently available for pre-ordering at B&H for $1,890 (β¬1,950 incl. VAT). LEICA’s latest camera offering, the SL3-S, can also be purchased with the lens as a kit for $6,495 (β¬6,500 incl. VAT).
