Mark the Date – Canon and Sony Tease New Cameras for May 13, Set 30 Minutes Apart

Canon and Sony have both posted teasers pointing to camera announcements on May 13, with the two events scheduled just 30 minutes apart in an unusual scheduling collision between the industry’s two largest camera brands.

Both teasers landed within hours of each other this week, breaking what has been an unusually slow first half of the year for new camera launches. After NAB delivered little in the consumer mirrorless space and CP+ produced more concept demos than shipping products, May 13 is now shaping up to be the most consequential single day for new gear in 2026 so far.

Sony’s “next R” teaser

The Sony teaser, posted across the Sony Alpha social channels, carries the tagline “Ready for the next R” and points to a 9:30 AM EDT / 13:30 CEST / 22:30 JST reveal. Sony has not named the camera, but the “R” pretty clearly aligns with the company’s high-resolution full-frame line. The current a7R V launched in October 2022 with a 61MP Exmor R sensor and a then-new AI processing unit, which you can read more about in our launch coverage.

Canon’s “one camera, many stories”

Canon’s teaser, posted under the tagline “Every moment has a story waiting to be told. One camera. Endless possibilities.”, points to a 9 AM EDT / 3 PM CEST launch, exactly 30 minutes ahead of Sony. The clip closes with two red triangles forming a “V” shape, and a brief silhouette of the body shows a flat top and what appears to be a tally lamp.
