Orion HDMI Monitor App Introduced - Turn Your iPad Into a Monitor

Lux Optics is known for their popular Halide Camera, Spectre, and Skylight apps. Now they are back with the Orion HDMI Monitor app, enabling you to turn your iPad into a portable monitor. Let’s have a look at what it does!

The Orion HDMI Monitor app will let you turn your iPad into a monitor screen when you connect it to any HDMI device with either a USB-C Capture Card or a ‘dongle’. This app is meant for simple use as a larger display and for gaming on-the-go, and your iPad will need to run iOS 17 and requires a USB-C port to run it.

Attach your iPad to your camera to preview video

Your iPad can be attached to any Mac or PC as an extra display. It can also be attached to your camera, enabling you to use it as a preview on-camera monitor for your mirrorless camera, for example. Mind you that we did not test this app, so we cannot give any information about how many “camera monitor” specific functions like waveform, peaking, false color, and so on are there. (It’s most certainly not as fully featured as Sony’s Monitor & Control app that we reported about, which is of course to some specific Sony cameras.) We also have no information about latency.

The Orion HDMI Monitor app for enhanced gaming

For gamers, you can connect to any HDMI-enabled console, allowing you to either enhance HD games by playing on a larger screen or enjoy older games with CRT emulation.

Price and availability

The app is free to download in the Apple store. The Orion Pro has extra features that include AI-powered 4K Upscaling, a 3-way retro CRT Emulation FX, and Picture Adjustment (video brightness) for a one-time unlock fee of $4.99.
