Panasonic Future Firmware Updates for the LUMIX S1II, S1IIE and S1RII Announced

Alongside the LUMIX S1II and S1IIE launch, Panasonic also announced future firmware updates, including improvements for the S1RII, too. These updates will add support for ARRI LogC3 Log recording, the possibility of having multiple frame markers, and Bluetooth connectivity to DJI gimbals. So, let’s take a closer look at these!

After launching no less than two new cameras, the Panasonic LUMIX S1II and S1IIE, and one lens, the LUMIX S 24-60mm F/2.8, the company also unveiled future firmware updates that will add more features to both cameras. Furthermore, a firmware update will also be released for the LUMIX S1RII that was released in February 2025 and is Panasonic’s first mirrorless camera capable of 8K internal recording and that can also record in various flavors of ProRes, including ProRes RAW, internally.

Panasonic’s future firmware updates for the LUMIX S1II, S1IIE, and S1RII

Let’s start with the upcoming firmware update for the S1RII, which will mainly benefit from all of the improvements already available on the S1II and S1IIE:

• Open Gate 8.1K internal recording at up to 30P will be available.
• Supports HEIF recording in 4:2:0 10-bit format.
• Addition of RAW HDMI external recording: 8.1K / 7.2K (3:2) Open Gate recording and RAW data video can be output via HDMI for external recording in ProRes RAW on the Atomos Ninja V/V+ and Shogun Connect, or Blackmagic RAW on the 5/7″ Video Assist 12G HDR. Also, you can record proxy files to the internal memory card during HDMI RAW video data output.
• Direct transfers from the CFexpress Type B or SD memory card to an external SSD to speed up your workflow and give you more flexibility.
• Addition of HLG View Assist.
• Addition of live streaming UVC/UAC over USB-C.
• If you are using select lenses (S-E2460, S-X50, S-R24105, S-R2060), the focus ring can be used as a control ring. Furthermore, the focus rotation direction can be selected in MF mode.
• The AF frame color can be chosen from 10 colors.
• Similar to the S1II and S1IIE: timecode sync over Bluetooth, new HEIF still image format, urban sports AF, control ring assignment, and transfer between storage devices via the LUMIX FLOW app.

While all of these are significant improvements for LUMIX S1RII owners, if you plan on getting the S1II or S1IIE, you’ll be pleased to know that upcoming firmware updates for all three cameras will also add support for ARRI LogC3 using the DMW-SFU3A Software Upgrade Key. This ARRI picture profile is already available for the Panasonic LUMIX GH7 via a paid firmware update.

Furthermore, these future firmware updates will add support for multiple frame markers, which will be expanded from 10 to 17 and enable simultaneous display of up to three frames. This feature is handy if you’re shooting vertical video but also need markers for 9:16 or 1:1. Lastly, all three cameras will be able to connect to DJI gimbals via Bluetooth.

Price and availability

All three firmware updates should be available later this year, but we don’t have a precise date.
